I don't get that. You'd think Apple would want both formats to fail the way SACD and Audio-DVD did due to mp3, so that they can make digital distribution with iTunes the main source of new movies.

Since Disney supports Bluray and Jobs is on their board of directors (and also their largest shareholder), that might explain why he decided to go that way. But I agree with you though. You'd think out of all people, he would want both format to fail.

Digital distribution still has a LONG way to go IMO. Unless there's some drastic change... an HD movie is far easier to rent than to deal w/ connection issues and download times. Streaming? How many times has it gotten stuck for you... it is just not the same experience as plopping in a disc and enjoying your popcorn..... YET.

With that, something is needed... if not for media, for pure storage. Altho, even bluray is short on that. HDD's are cheaper still, but at hopefully we'll have something that's archival quality.

The video editing angle is where it's at...

ah yes, I forgot to mention that. I was more tied to the whole concept of digital distribution. Until we all can get cheap fiber, I think it's a limited market.

Downloads are just now beginning to replacing DVD quality video downloads.

At some 40GB per HD disk... DL content won't be replacing physical media in HD for about 5 years or so, at least, IMO (stuff like FIOS has to get a lot more market saturation).
