"It's a huge project. This is a really significant investment by a single company in solar power. Apple is really taking it to the next level with its commitment to renewable energy," Johnson said.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the new project will cover 1,300 acres in an area about an hour south of Apple's Silicon Valley headquarters. That area is the equivalent of about 1,000 football fields.

Cook said the plant will generate enough energy to power Apple's entire operation in California.

I'm not an Apple customer but this is really one of the best moves by any corporation I have heard of recently.

I think a lot of it is just PR. All that has happened is that Apple has agreed to buy some of the power from a 2,900 acre solar farm being planned by First Solar. Had Apple not made the deal, the power that would have gone to them would have just gone into the grid through PG&E.

Almost every story I have read seems to suggest that Apple's deal is responsible for this solar project being built but if you dig deeper I believe you will find that the solar farm would have been built with or without Apple.
