Ah, Xbox ditching Intel, switching to IBM. Apple ditching IBM, switching to Intel. Quite an interesting world, isn't it?

Well, so much for the irony of the Xbox360 running on chips that Apple PCs use.

Yeah, but Apple/IBM/Intel refused to comment on it. Nothing is final till you see the official press release ;)

wow, if it happens that's bad news for MS. OS X on Intel could make Apple a real player on the desktop front.

Edit unless Intel goes with something other than x86 for Apple, that is

How about if Intel makes an Itanium chip for Apple? That would allow Apple to remain segregated from PCs and allow Intel to finally start pushing IA64 into the desktop space. Makes sense strategically for both groups, Intel gets to increase market penetration of the Itanium and Apple gets to use Intel's manufacturing capabilities.

Wouldn't this be a huge pain in the ass for developers? I love my mini, but I don't know if this is good or bad. I guess if they go with the planned dothan- derivative intel cpu it would be pretty awesome, especially for multimedia work which intel already excels at. This could be a fantastic thing and would likely boost marketshare quite a bit :)

yup- by this point, both would be on equal ground hardware-wise, so it only comes down to which OS is better :) I would love to have a dual boot XP/OSX system.

Why so?
Maybe it would make it easier for MS purchase OSX and make Windows better to compete with Linux.

Hey. I'm gonna be there too. I will be in the booing camp. I like the PPC, but if they must switch to x86, I would have preferred AMD.

Itanium is a lot more expensive than the G5.

Also, to anyone mentioning Apple trying to beat MS for the OS marketshare, remember that Apple is a hardware company. If they allow OS X to run on any hardware other than thre own, there profits plummet.

Well to be honest, the more I think about it, the less likely I think that Apple on x86 is. This would mean almost certain end to their hardware business. That or they would have to move to an Alienware-type business model for it. Either way, I don't see Apple moving to x86 unless they are looking to completely change their hardware division
