Apple time capsule or icloud

I am not a tech head. I have been updating my home network this week and have spent hours
trying to find articles that can explain what or if there is any difference between storing files on
a apple time capsule versus icloud storage. If I wanted to pay for all of the cloud storage that I
needed what would be the reason to have a physical external storage device at home. I currently
have 3 MacBooks that I use. One is a 2009 model that still works but I do not use, one for
work away from home and one that I use mainly for iTunes and surfing the internet. I could
take this to the apple support communities but I likely would not get the real answer.

Thank you,
Bill

Home VS cloud service boils down to backups & speed & reliability.
If they are local, then you can access things MUCH faster than the cloud, and don't have to worry if the cloud goes down.
However, most people that get backup units don't backup the backup units (have redundancy), so, if something happen to the main backup device, they are SOL.
That is not the case with the cloud, since the provider should store multiple copies on archival storage.

Best case is, have both, but only put the important files (must have files) encrypted in the cloud, and that shouldn't cost that much.
