If you pay $20 / year for cloud storage, Amazon will let you upload unlimited non-Amazon MP3s and non-DRM iTunes AAC songs to use with their cloud player.

Since Amazon is making their Android app store available to the Fire, you'll probably also be able to buy apps for streaming content from a PC or server.

the stats actually disprove your personal observation.

Mac and iOS users often upgrade to the latest release at a surprisingly high clip.

No idea what sontin is trying to argue, Apple purposely chooses to have very few SKUs (across all their product lines). That's a major reason why many Android fans here wouldn't buy an iPhone!

Compare to this:

This is dated August. When was Gingerbread out? Oh December.

That graph doesn't make sense. Honeycomb isn't a phone OS. They might as well put "Vista, Ubuntu, and Lion" on there to get a few more low numbers.

so maybe you should ignore 1.3% of that pie? I'm not trying to start a debate here, I was just stating a fact to counter a prior claim.

Seems to me the maker of that pie chart was more interested in filling up the table with a bunch of low numbers (to make something look bad perhaps?).

The point being, that's a pretty poorly done pie chart and table, with either a very uninformed or biased creator. :)

That creator would be Google.

To put into perspective:

You can purchase TWO Amazon Fires and still have a Benjamin Franklin left over.

I admit apple is top of the line but I think they are over priced. When most people are going to want to get in bed and pick up a tablet to send off an email, search the web and catch up with what's going on in FB or check out what's up with Anand... :) At least that's 75% for me. I might play a game or two. Or install an odd app... Taking pictures? I got a nice digital camera for that. I feel that the size is perfect for taking with you. I for one won't be buying an Ipad.

People buy devices for different personal reasons.

What "non-Amazon" media do most people have that must be usable?

Mp3s? That is a little too nerdy. How are regular people going to get MP3s, outside of Amazon? If you say piracy, you are not in Amazon's target market.

iTunes music? That is useless unless they paid extra to remove the DRM which is unlikely considering most people don't understand DRM. Many people will just be surprised when their Fire doesn't magically hook up to iTunes. But hey, they are paying less than half an iPad so they have to expect something not to work.

Pictures? Can be put into a cloud easily.

Video files? Most people watch stuff off Youtube, Netflix or Hulu. Only geeks like me have a video file collection.

What media will the Fire not play that regular people have?

I personally have tons of local media, and I wouldn't consider the Fire for this reason. But I am still buying one for my mom-it is perfect for her and she is a better customer for Amazon because she is actually willing to buy DRM movies from them.

I just want to point out one thing here, regardless of whether or not you are for or against the Fire. It has to do with Amazon's cloud. I hate Itunes. I have said it time and again, but sometimes I have to use it. Recently, I had to use it to buy Richie Kotzen's recent cd, 24 Hours. Of course I get the in Apple format (which I forget what it is) and then I convert back to Mp3 in Itunes. I now have both formats on my hardrive. I upload the mp3 version to my Amazon cloud drive and boom...load it right to my HTC Thunderbolt. What is so hard to comprehend?

Now given, if Amazon for some reason designed the Fire to work differently with its cloud than everything else...sure...don't buy it. I sure won't. If you can't download movies and music directly too it, like I can on my phone (at least with music, I haven't tried movies) I won't buy it either. There is nothing complex about it. It takes no time or effort.
