VERY impressed with the new Mini's - quad i7 option with 8 gigs of RAM, and the "low end" model starts at $599!

And ARGGGGG no 8GB RAM option on the new Airs! A man cannot live on 4GB alone!! lol

About time they released it, macbook air is still way too expensive. I want a 13" laptop, but will stay on the windows side of things.

Replacing a hard drive on the mac mini is still a pain.

Definitely not, I was hoping for 8GB RAM AND Backlit keyboard :(

I just can't live on 4GB RAM. Heck, I choke that just using Chrome!

I'm hoping they at least put SATA-III into it. OWC makes some really nice SSD upgrades for the Air's mSATA port, so if we can bump that up to 559 MB/s with the new SF-2000 chipset, then maybe - maybe - that will help the RAM issue with virtual memory.

That new Mini, OTOH - helllllllloooooo living room! :awe:

No quads in the Mini on my page. All 3 CPUs are dual-core. Just because it's named i7 doesn't make it a quad (hello Intel mobile chips naming) ;)

No optical drive built in, but it does look nicer without it. :)

BTW, among the options listed for the $799 2.5Ghz Mini is:

  • 750GB (7200-rpm) hard drive
    256GB solid-state drive
    256GB solid-state drive and 750GB (7200-rpm) hard drive

2 HDDs? Interesting.

[Edit] Just went to the store and saw:

Hard Drive
Your Mac mini comes as standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a larger hard drive with a faster 7200-rpm speed for greater performance and more room for your files. Or choose a solid-state drive, which has no moving parts and provides greater responsiveness and durability. Or select both drives for performance and capacity.
...
Mac mini also offers an optional 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), which has no moving parts and delivers increased drive performance for many operations. The 256GB SSD can be purchased in place of a standard hard drive or in addition to a 750GB 7200-rpm drive.

If you configure your Mac mini with both the solid-state drive and the 750GB Serial ATA hard drive, the solid-state drive will come pre-formatted with OS X as your boot drive, allowing you to use the hard drive for videos, photos and other files.

...

500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [Add $150.00]
256GB Solid State Drive [Add $600.00]
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm + 256GB Solid State Drive [Add $750.00]

Does Lion let you move your user directory more easily? Because I'd love to just re-point my home directory off the SSD for massive secondary storage and only have OS/app/current project launching from the SSD.

Yeah apparently the old host my blog was on is blocked. Just google "weaksauce12 99% rule" :awe:

The AppleTV does price better than a Mini. But imo, Plex is far superior. I have an AppleTV and it's pretty decent, but I mostly just use it for Netflix. I will definitely be picking up a new Mini soon for my HTPC, especially since Boxee released their Boxee Box remote for PC/Mac for $39!

Air is not a production machine.
it's an executive or highly portable machine.

I'm more surprised (and happy) that they dropped the optical drive from the Mini!

Same. Depending on what work does for me computer-wise in September, I may give my MBP to my wife, sell her 2008 Macbook, sell the appletv2, and use the $$$ to get the low-end mini for an HTPC.

edit: A few things I want to know about the display:

1. How long is the cord? Will it reach a desktop on the floor or not?
2. Can I hook BOTH my MBP and my desktop up to it, and switch which screen gets displayed?
