Apple has come under increasing scrutiny for its offshoring of product manufacturing in recent years, with a number of observers believing that Apple should be trying to bring more jobs to the United States. But as noted by AllThingsD, Apple has now taken a more public position on its domestic impact by posting a new page on its site highlighting over 500,000 U.S. jobs it claims to be directly or indirectly responsible for.

But what is the truth behind it ? http://*******/mGBfZ

well...I can tell you that the whole apps thing is a huge business now. If you look up "engineer" on indeed.com, a good number of the jobs are for mobile development. It just so happens that iOS has one of the bigger market shares, so that is where lots of development goes into. So, yeah, they are not really being untruthful...

You cannot contribute those to Apple though, cell phones were heading this direction anyways.

500K jobs - sure, that's believable. But how many of those jobs were filled by people in other countries or brought over to the US from other countries?

I remember reading an article saying Jobs wanted to bring some idevice manufacturing to the states but for some political reason he was unable to.

I agree, but lots of that development IS for the iOS. So Apple is not really being untruthful. It's just the product of being the majority in the market.

Well, my friend works doing mobile development now. His office is all American people. It's the first time I have seen a software development team with just American people. In contrast, go to a company like Mathworks, it is the exact opposite.

I agree with that. If not for Apple, for another cell phone maker.

Must be nice living in that bubble. The reality is if it weren't for apple we'd still be using blackberry style phones and buying software off of the old winmo/palm software websites and connecting our phones to load the software on. That's all I hear: "well the industry was heading that way anyway". I guess it just so happens that apple seems to get there first whether it be tablets, phones, "ultrabooks", aluminum body laptops, and soon to be ultra high-res tablet screens.

The whole idea for Apple for North American job creation is the value added services and (primarily) retail jobs at their stores.

So let me get this straight, let's offshore production and create near minimum wage jobs for yanks to sell shit to other yanks!

Brilliant, skilled labour put to productive use!

And having manufacturing monkeys and ruining home environment is better? All the top engineers, developers, marketers, and finance brains are here in the states. We're outsourcing monkey work to monkey people. The shit works.

Obama asked him to keep jobs out of America so it would be easier to push his communist agenda. But Jobs decided to ignore him and the new apple TV was supposed to be made here. Obama caught wind and directed the CIA to give him pancreatic cancer. WTG Obama!

readem and weep...

jobs didn't...it couldn't happen.

its not just political, the chinese have armies of production engineers and the rest and a government and system that lets them build the factory in months or whatever whereas here it would take that long to do the environmental review. the same folks bitching about apples jobs or chinese workers would work to block the plant from even being made...i'm sure a wood chuck somewhere would be harmed by its existence. plus as u see int he article they can hire 3000 workers at a go...that ship has sailed.

as for this thread, i get the spammy vibe from op.

i'm not sure why people bitch about apple anyways. they've found a way to keep a few jobs that are left in the us, what are you going to do, buy nokia/sony/samsung/htc where they don't even provide us engineering jobs even?:p

If the choice is between having a skilled workforce and having an unskilled work force the choice is obvious.
