Limited to use apples crappy earbuds or imitations. Of course they will sell you an adapter for that.

Nah, there are some third-party headphones that will work, but they need a relatively tall plug (i.e. not those 90-degree plugs that you sometimes see).

It really started with the iPhone 6 and its mis-aligned sensor/front camera but this is just in a league of its own. It looks like one of those really cheap, noname battery cases.
