Anyone have any experience buying refurbished Apple Powerbooks? Any success or horror stories to share? I'm thinking of investing in a refurb 12" powerbook sometime in the next month or so, mostly for portable digital slide presentations and modest word processing needs.

thanks for any feedback

I dont personally have experience with Apple refurbs. but my friend does. He is a producer/engineer and bought his Mac's this way. He has never had a problem with them and they have been generous a few times to upgrade what was actually on the computer.

Me, personally, I am getting my first laptop...which will also be my first Apple...I like the peace of mind of buying new.

If you're a student or know a student who hates Apple, you may want to look into the Student Developer Program:

click the HARDWARE PURCHASE PROGRAM STORE (U.S.) link.

is being a student the only prerequiste to getting this discount?

yup... I used it to buy mine. AWESOME discount :)

why would the discount be more than the educational discount?

Its for student developers.. they want people to develop for mac so they give a bigger discount. You don't technically have to be a developer though ;)

Don't foget tax free holidays are coming up if applicable to your area. I know both GA and NC have theirs end of July / early august. If you have your orders shipped to an address in one of these states and it meets the tax free requirements, you should be able to save another $100 or so.

There's also an iPod rebate:

If you're not going to use the iPod, you can sell it on ebay and use the rebate profits toward your notebook purchase.

also very nice and since i would like an ipod (who wouldn't?), this may be a better deal in the end than the student developer option.
thanks!
