I, as an AMERICAN, prefer to keep jobs HERE.

That said, when there is a signifigant improvement in quality, I have no problem giving work to other countries. I generally like European cars better than American ones. Etc. But working for a company that outsources the bulk of its IT development, I know just what kinds of quality we get out of Bangalore.

Thanks but no thanks.

Just like Japan until the late 70's, the quality just ISN'T THERE. And companies are starting to realize that.

Oh, and another company has started using Indian factories: Bosch.

Get a German made Bosch spark plug and an Indian made one. The Indian one has burrs and uneven turns on the threads. Can you say "destroyed head"? I knew you could. I took my Bosch plugs back and got some NGKs.

A product is a product is a product. It might make better business sense to keep as much in the USA as possible while still letting companies outsource if it makes good sense.

Your consumers will like it even less, if your companies are not allowed to do their jobs efficiently, thus driving up prices.

And great, you want more taxes and barriers, ha ha ha. Same as legislation.

You are paying for nobody.

The Americans pay indians because they get the job done more efficiently and they pay taxes to the American govt as good businesses, simple.

As for the rest of your comment, it not deserve any replies.

Failed reading, huh?

I said apply EXISTING legislation to this. In fact, we should have been doing so all along. That has nothing to do with outsourcing jobs specifically. It's just fairness across different industries. Why should the information sector get perks the automotive sector doesn't get?

You do realize that low or no tariffs are essential to "free trade" and globalization, yes?

Myself, I dislike globalization...it's good for grunt workers in the 3rd world, and corporate execs in the first, and bad for everyone else.

If you think the outsourcing trend is going to stop, then you are more deluded than I can give you credit for.

Yeah, that is a great strategy. Save some money and lose customers because of it. Dell USED to be renowned for their support. I'd now rank them close to the bottom. When I call my bank (BoA), it is EXTREMELY refreshing to hear someone from the US on the phone. That's a BIG plus I give to the bank. I commend Apple for pulling out and hope the rest of the companies do the same.

BoA is outsourcing a lot of their techie (I believe) jobs to India as well and is expecting the current employees to train their replacements.

I'd heard that. They've sure come a long way from Bank of Italy, huh?

EDIT: Italy, not India. I've got India on the brain from this thread. Sigh.

There is a thing called quality control at Bosch.

I hate outsourced tech support and the like. Seriously, in my experience the people on the phone are nowhere near qualified to be doing tech support. I called Motorola a few times and never found a guy that could help me troubleshoot a modem I had, one guy even transferred me to a billing representative  Eventually I just did it myself using internet forums

I appreciate American companies hiring Americans. If the people in India want to move here and become Americans, then so be it. They've worked hard enough to learn English and at least some of them learn the technical skill required (my experience may have been a fluke), so it would be cool if they could move here and earn the same as an American, so long as they meet qualifications.

My view is that outsourcing as a phenomenon will not have any great impact upon global business. The current fear over outsourcing is as paranoid as when Americans accused the Japanese car companies of destroying their car industry.

Hehe, Japanese car companies are KILLING American ones (in the US and Canada). I live in Detroit and am seeing it first hand.

But the difference is, they make a better product. I have no problems with the Indian accent, I grew up in India but I can see how it can be annoying for a lot of Americans. No matter how qualified they may be, communication skills are extremely important in this culture.

Wow, to this whole thread....
Braznor needs to chill the fsck out and head to P&N
It's obvious that Apple wasn't too happy with their India call center
I work for a large fabless company that acquired anouther company that had India operations (my group doesn't have them because we're too time critical) and it took a few months for management here to realize that every time-sensitive product needs to be developed here and India gets to work on test frameworks. I am not sure why that is, whether it is competence or merely the latency caused by time zone shifts, but the growth of companies than heavily outsource (Dell, GE, IBM to name the biggest ones) speaks for the efficiency of their operations. None of them have grown in equity value since 2000.
