Isn't there a 3rd party player for H.264 HD on Windows already?

Anyways, these are the G5 requirements:

For 1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

* 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
* At least 256 MB of RAM
* 64 MB or greater video card

For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

* Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
* At least 512 MB of RAM
* 128 MB or greater video card
However, people are reporting it plays on lesser stuff than that fine. Well, it's fine on lesser G5s, but not so fine on G4s. I'll test it out later.

i'm sure someone has a H.264 codec for pc but these files are in a QT container so it will only play in QT

On a DP 867 with 9700Pro and 1.25GB RAM I got 10-12fps on Batman Begins and Serenity. Video quality looked great tho.

1.7 GHz G4 Cube (with crappy 100 MHz bus and GeForce2 MX) - Batman Begins: 12 fps.
However, it was only something like 1 fps with the 1080p Batman trailer. :(

Apparently, it's uber smooth on a 1.6 GHz G5 (70% CPU) for the normal Batman clip, and 15 fps at 1080p.

Obviously... G5 >>> G4 for this stuff. :p

I wonder when the Windows version will be out, and what kind of requirements will be required.

Interesting. My lowly 1 GHz G4 PowerBook (133 MHz bus, 1 MB L3, Radeon 9000) plays the clips better than my 1.7 GHz Cube.

It's probably a combination of faster bus speed (more RAM bandwidth) and a better GPU. Radeon 9000 is superior to the GF2 MX IIRC.

Yes, the Radeon 9000 >>> GeForce2 MX. The Radeon also has Shader 1.1/1.4 (but not Shader 2.0). The GeForce2 MX does not. Whatever the case, this has manifested itself in the DVD player for OS X. See this pic. Thumbnails, Video Zoom, Video Color, and Video Deinterlacing are all not supported on the GeForce2 MX, but the Radeon 9000 supports them. I dunno how much difference the GPU makes for Apple's H.264 decoder though.

Your mini is faster than my TiBook. It has a higher clock speed and twice the L2 cache, and a faster bus. However, it doesn't have the 1 MB L3 cache I have. Your Radeon 9200 supports the same feature set as my Radeon 9000, although I have 64 MB and you have 32 MB.

The 720p stuff should play fine at around 12 fps I'm guessing. 1080p stuff will suck though.

So.... So far the slowest Mac I've seen decode 720p 24 fps material is a dual G4 1 GHz (133 MHz bus), or else an iMac with single G5 1.6 (533 MHz bus).

The slowest for 1080p 24 fps material is a dual 1.8 GHz G5 (900 MHz bus). The 1.8 GHz iMacs get about 15 fps.

Is it even worth trying to run any of those clips on my single 800mhz G4 system with a 32mb radeon 7500 running OS 10.2.8?

QuickTime 7 only runs on 10.3 and 10.4 (and eventually Windows). Jaguar 10.2 is not supported.

I'd definitely think about upgrading to Tiger (maybe after a couple of updates), cuz Jag isn't even in the same league as Tiger in terms of features. And Tiger is faster too.

As for adequacy of your G4 800... I dunno, but I get 12 fps with a 1 GHz G4 for 720p24. The 12 fps is constant too, so it looks OK, but not totally smooth obviously. Fortunately there are no audio dropouts whatsoever. I think Apple did a good job with the decoder, cuz even with my 2 fps on the much harder 1080p decode, the audio is always perfect. I wonder if Apple will make the Windows version of QuickTime 7 as smooth. I doubt it, but one can always hope...

Its my father's computer, not mine, so it will never be upgraded. We had our last computer for 8 years before I finally convinced him to get the G4.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't a 100% software decode on both cards.

Are there are any consumer video cards that support hardware H.264 decode assist?

Not yet (well, as far as i can tell. I've already tried using QT alternative 1.46. There's sound but no video). Hopefully they're working on it...

There are a number of MPEG-4 part 10 / H.264 decoders available but as said the MOV container requires QT7 which has yet to be released. Once it has, QuickTime Alternative will presumably repack the core schtuff in the way we have come to know and love. :)

Quicktime player belongs in hell right next to real player. Unless this stuff works on some other media player (and on a PC), I'm not going to bother with it.
