If its a purple apple, that flashes, from that to a folder with a question mark it genereally means it cannot locate a boot decive.
What he can try is boot off the apple os cd by instering it into the drive and while the machine initially powers up hold the C key.
He should then beable to run Disk First Aid(mac os 9) or disk utility (mac x) to see if it can repair the drive, provided the drive is reconized
if not may need repair install of os if drive is reconized

The loading takes a long time, but after the wait everything goes back to the way it normally is. One thing that he keeps complaining about though is that it crashes alot.

I don't know what is wrong with the sucker. I have never heard of something like that happening. It is odd.

I told him he should just go to tiger, but he dosn't have the time to buy it and he would rather not mess with the thing. Aparently hes had a lot of problems with it. It won't recognize his ipod, and other little quirks.

Let's get something straight here, what version of Mac OS is your friend using? Maybe then we can get this sorted out (oh, and what type of power mac is it?)
