Apple now touting iPhone/iPod as gaming platform superior to DS and PSP

Link

Specifically, the firm moved to crticise the buying experience for the DS and PSP in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..." said Apple's marketing VP Phil Schiller.

"We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience."

A demo slide at the event compared the quantity of games on the platforms: PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178, before kicking into a video montage of App Store games.

Ok, but probably about 98% of those iPod games are crap. Quantity does not equal Quality. The DS certainly won't be celebrating the quality of its games but...c'mon.

Its just like internet flash games that everyone and their brother pumps out... tons of crap in it

 Apple

The Jobs Reality Distortion Field is at its strongest around Cupertino.

Edit: Gotta love The Time Warp...the OP is post #3.

I think it just depends on what you want from a portable game. I have a DS, but since I got my ipod touch, I don't use the DS anymore.

I prefer 30 $1 "crappy flash games" on the ipod to 1 $30 retail DS game. I paid $1 for Peggle on the ipod - it would have been ~$15 on the DS.

Add that to the fact that it's ridiculously thin and I can always have it on me, whereas a DS takes some effort - I think the ipod is a superior portable gaming platform. It's not for everyone, though.

LMAO. Ok, I need to add Gerstmann to my Twitter follow list.

I don't disagree that the DS is probably better than an iPhone. But the best portable gaming device is the one you have with you, just like a camera 🙂

I have all 3. The Iphone is good for certain types of games only. I would in no way get rid of my DS.

PSP to a lesser extent but since Valkyria Chrinicles 2 is coming out for it, I'll keep it forever and ever.

Word Ace(free downoad it seriously) and Tower Defense games are good examples of good IPhone games.

Its just as superior as the Wii is to the 360/PS3. I personally am not a DS/PSP kind of guy, but I do occasionally play free iPhone games. There is nothing the iPhone/iPod cant do that the PSP/DS can, aside from tactile feedback via actual buttons, and once the big devs start targeting it I have no doubt it will be the mobile gaming platform of choice. Afterall, you get gaming with your iPhone/iPod, and no one can compete with that.

 Apple is crazy. They do have a point about iPhone games being super cheap. And the iPhone is better for some genres because of its touch screen (though the DS has that too). But for most genres the lack of physical buttons makes the iPhone a terrible gaming platform.

I will say this though - I use my iPhone for gaming so much more than my PSP and DS, because I always have it with me. I have to plan ahead to bring my DS or PSP, and then that's another device I have to carry. The iPhone is my phone, so I'd have it regardless. As a result I only use my DS or PSP when I'm flying or driving long distances.

Oh, I'm not picking one over the other in terms best portable gaming device. I think the DS has some pluses over the PSP and iPhone/iPod, the PSP has some pluses over the DS and iPhone/iPod, etc.

I just thought highlighting the quantity of games on the iPhone/iPod was ridiculous because for every Peggle there are over 100 crap titles on the platform.

I don't think the Iphone is well suited to games like New Super Mario Bros.
It also seems quite unlikely that it will become the mobile gaming platform of choice.

The iPod Touch is the Second Life of the handheld gaming scene: lots of trashy content that's way over-hyped by the mainstream media.

When adapters like this start showing up, that argument becomes moot. I've seen games with virtual buttons that work well, but yeah, without an adapter with buttons games like Mario wont be as good. And if people like wii controls, who is to say accelerometer controls wont be just as big.

And we can agree to disagree on the mobile platform of choice. No other platform would people always carry around, because its their phone. Also, you can buy games anytime, anywhere. Devs can get impulse buyers, especially if you are waiting at an airport or whatnot. More advantages than disadvantages IMO.

99.9% of those apple games are trash. Complete trash.

The only two decent games I've played are Peggle, Secret of Monkey Island, and Myst, which are all ports and games I wouldn't want to play on an iphone anyway.

Advantages for devs maybe, but not for actual consumers who want to play quality video games.

Sure, if you some guy who has never played a game before and will buy some $5 trash title and enjoy the shallow gameplay, story, and graphics, then the iPhone is the platform for you.

However, I can't see anyone who has actually played and enjoyed decent games to really like 99.9% of the iPhone's content, and none of its original content. I haven't seen one decent exclusive game yet.

That said, I really do want an iPhone and hate Verizon for being on a different chipset 😛

I want to play a game with the depth of something like an Advance Wars or a Final Fantasy.

Oops, sorry! The App Store, however, does have an extensive selection of $1-$5 Flash games.

When the major devs start putting their games on it it will be the dominant platform, and they are starting to do it. Assassins Creed 2, Madden 10, etc. Most of the games for the iphone right now are independents, and sometimes they make decent stuff. Otherwise the quality is subpar, but that has nothing to do with the iPhone/iPod as a gaming platform. More and more real game developers are developing for the iphone, and you see it in the games that are starting to come out. So if Square does FF for iPhone and DS, why buy the DS version when you can play the same game on the iPhone and not carry around yet another device?

I disagree. The iPhone version will be worse because a touch screen is inferior to physical buttons for controlling games. Everyone knows this.

I have a nifty Mario-like game for my iPhone called Castle Magic by Gameloft. I think Gameloft has made some pretty good games for the iPhone so far. They also made that God of War clone.

EDIT:

By Mario-like, I mean it's a side scrolling platformer with similar jump-to-kill mechanics and costume-shifting power-ups.

Depends on the game. Madden? Yeah, you need buttons. A turn-based FF game? I don't see why a touch interface wouldn't work.

And everyone knows waggle is inferior to analog sticks and buttons. Didn't stop the Wii from being successful. And its not just price, as the Wii still outsells everything and it isnt the cheapest thing available.

If you truly think that the iPhone version of Madden or Assassin's Creed will be anywhere nearly as advanced and/or involved as a DS and/or PSP version, then I truly don't know what to say. You are either incredibly naive, or a really rabid Apple fanboi. I'm hoping on the former.

PS - There is already a Mass Effect and an MGS game for the iPhone. NOTHING like the originals at all. In fact, didn't they both get horrible reviews? Why? Because they are bad games, and the iPhone is not nor will it ever be a complete gaming platform.

No one is saying the iPhone won't be successful. It already is successful anyway, so such argument is mute.

The discussion is about what platform is the best gaming platform as has the best games.

Copies sold != quality game.

The most successful companies are those that churn out the cheapest, least quality products that require little to no innovation.
