Nearly half a terabyte of storage per 1U Xserve offers four hot-plug Ultra ATA/100 7200rpm drives, and can be configured with up to 480GB of storage per 1U server ? nearly half a terabyte, and over twice that of its nearest competitor.

480GB! In a 1U! :Q:Q:Q

Yep, I posted it this morning over in the General Hardware forum. You know, the place where computer stuff is discussed. ;)

.5 TB in a 1U rackmount won't do the server market much good if it's not redundant or fault tolerant.

EDIT: Or SCSI for that matter.

yeah, that is a big number the marketing guys put in there, who would spend that much $ on that many ATA drives?

just wait till apple redesigns the whole thing in a year and makes it totally incompatible with the old model.

So tell me, how does one put 48 1U servers together (like they brag about) without requiring a whole separate, dedicated powerline to the rack? Likewise, its not as if you can just throw Netware Clustering Services on there or anything, so what good is it without any redundance?

I think they look awesome.

Also, note that it uses DDR RAM (PC2100). Maybe this means their desktops will be getting DDR soon? (finally)

Our new Dell 1U "pizza boxes" have 4 hot swappable SCSI drives right in front, a couple of cool blue LED's, and look way better when in a cabinet than that.

gee-fskcing-whiz.

There is absolutely nothing special or good about these. There's much better stuff on the PC side of things.

I don't care what a bunch of overzealous mac bashers say, GIMME SUMMA DAT SH!T!!! :)

One thing that caught my attention, though, is that they point out the feature of having a serial port for command line control. The only reason you'd need to do it that way is if a remote shell server isn't included. I expect a *NIX rackmount to have an SSH server ready to go out of the box at the very least!
