I'm trying to get a laptop in trade for my PC, and more. URL is located here..
Linkie

Someone offered me the following

400 G4 Ti Powerbook
640 mB Ram
10 gig HD
Airport(wifi)
Dvd
External CDRW, Zip, and 80 gig HD
Laptop Case
USB Hub
Optical Mouse

What do you all think? Would this be idea for me? What should help me make my decision? I'll have another PC to use for things like my PC peripherals, and other software, but this will be my main PC. Would this work with a regular wireless router? Think it comes with a regular ethernet port, and if so, would it work in my D-Link 4 port router? What should I think of to help me make this decision? How fast are these things, and such?

I personally could never use a 400mhz G4 as my main PC. Too slow. Also are you familiar with macs? They are much more limited in their use than a PC IMO. Much smaller software library.

I don't know, the desktop system that you're selling is actually quite good aside from the graphics card. If I were to appraise the used value of your system it would be:

- case: $25
- psu: $30
- cpu: $40
- mobo: $70
- ram: $35
- graphics: $40
- dvd burner: $40
- hard drive: $60
- cathode: $10 (?)
TOTAL: $350

You're not going to get much of a laptop for $350, so I suppose what you're proposing is a fair deal. I am not familiar with Apple laptop prices so I can't really say either way. I'm thinking that for that amount of money you could get a P3 600mhz IBM laptop or something. I'm not sure how that compares to the G4, but I remember hearing about how badly the G4s were beaten by intel/AMD cpus, so you might want to look into it.

Yeah, someone talked me out of that. I hadnt realised it was so slow. But see that PC, I'm not tryiung to trade just the PC, I'm trying to get the best laptop I can for anything that whomever wants. I wont take a 600Mhz laptop, too slow. Huge difference from 2.2GHz to 600Mhz... Thanks for the input, and the price quote on my PC! :D

If you would more clearly state your needs in a laptop I could reccomend something for you. Will you be on the road with it often? What kind of battery life do you require? Do you plan to use it for gaming? What are the most intensive tasks you will require of it? Do you want something thin/light or something big/powerful?

Basically your options in a new laptop are:

- Centrino
- AMD Athlon XP Mobile
- AMD Athlon 64 (limited...not much to choose from)
- Mobile P4
- Mobile P4 Celeron
- Centrino Celeron

Each of those has its pros/cons depending on your uses.

This is my computer use.

Definitely not on the road much, so battery life isn't TOO important. I will use it for gaming, not much though, Civ3, The Sims, Starcraft, and such. I prefer lightweight but as long as it isnt like those old early 90s laptops that are huge, 2" thick and heavy, I'd be happy.

Oh, and stuff Ill be doing..

I download stuff, of course, game, notepad and AIM are the most used programs.. :p

Really gaming is the most intensive thing, and that isnt even too intensive.

I dunno, personally I would buy a Centrino Celeron based system as they are cheap, perform almost as well as a regular Centrino, and have excellent battery life compared to AMD and P4Ms. I like the thin/light Acer laptops. They seem like excellent values. Many people think they are a lousy brand, but I'm not sure why.

Also, you can custom-build Asus laptops. Check your local computer stores.

The problem is you're still looking at $800-$1000 for a decent new laptop.

For your use you could probably get away with a cheap Athlon XP Mobile setup, but I still prefer the Centrino platform.

If the lappy is only as a secondary computer for on the road with limited or no gaming intended I would consider a newer mac notebook with at least 1GHz. In fact I have done just that and will post when It is delivered and I have worked with it for a while.

If it is supposed to be a primary machine or even only machine, get an x86. I recommend IBM solely because of their build quality. DELLs are not as nicely built IMO (Comparable to ACER in fact) but they run well so check DELL and ACER out aswell. From what you describe, how much you plan to go on the road with it, a Pentium4 Mobile would suit you well and not bust the bank.

LINK

It's in $CDN. In $US it would be approx. $950US. Looks like a nice laptop to me, but it's an "Avaratec"...I've never heard of the brand.

Like I said then, for $350 keep dreaming. You're not going to get anything better than a P3 for that amount of cash. Sorry if I burst your bubble.

The Wifi works fine with any standard 802.11b router, and the Ethernet is standard too.

However, a G4 400 TiBook would be slow for general use and very slow for gaming. Plus a 10 GB hard drive is just about useless these days, not to mention the fact that most 10 GB laptop hard drives are slow too.

An iBook G4 1.07 GHz is quite snappy, but of course nobody is going to trade you one for a lower-end PC. :p
