Apple Leak: 17" iMac @ $899

There's a kid at my college who carries around a 17" iMac to his classes. It looks crazy, but it's genius...a pimped-out 17" iMac is probably close $2,000 less than than a 17" Macbook Pro!

It won't be as powerful as Macbook Pro, that's basically my point. It's going to be the fundamentals of a Macbook attached to a 17" desktop monitor because it has to be cheap. Of course it would probably be just as easy to call it a Mac Mini with a monitor, since the Mini and the Macbook are so similar too.

In the original Apple iMac box (the one with the carrying handle). Our school is pretty high-tech...we have network & power jacks on every desk and plenty of room next to the workstations to do it. Just something else to carry with your backpack...

Well, I suppose if one already has an iMac, and doesn't want to buy/can't afford a MacBook... then he is already quite close due to all the all-in-one-ness. All he needs is a battery pack and he will be all set in the event of a power loss (unless the rooms all have individual UPSs of course).

as do we all.

For some reason this reminds me of the dude who used to carry around a Palm and one of those collapsible keyboards. He'd break the thing out and it'd be this big keyboard with little tiny display. He used it to take notes.

Kaido, this is way off topic, but why are people selling your book for $70+ in used condition from Amazon when it's available for $20 new via the same link? 🙂

Well, we're not using the Amazon Advantage program, which means we're the "Buy it now" main button like other products (they charge 55% per book for that! haha. we'd be paying customers to buy from us if we did that lol). So that allows other sellers to sell it if they want to (like selling it "Used"). Apparently this other seller jacks up prices and resells books at 3x the price, we haven't figured out why. Also he hasn't purchased any actual books from us, so he's assuming we have inventory should anyone ever purchase from us. Very strange situation.

I had that. I busted it out once when I was alone in the library. It looked so retarded, I folded it back up and never used it again.

Strange indeed. And 55% per book? Wow. If you wanted to spend that, it might be cheaper to use Amazon Fulfillment!

So naturally you won't be shipping that guy any books if someone buys from him? 🙂

Yup, we are using Amazon Fulfillment. If we were to use the Advantage program, we would literally be paying customers to purchase our books. The problem is distribution...Amazon is the biggest book distributor on the Internet and reaches a national and global audience with ease, and no one else matches them in that regard. So you either go with them and take the hit, or you try to DIY - but you really need a multi-million dollar marketing campaign to get it out on that kind of level on your own, PLUS you'd need a fulfillment house to handle orders. So it's difficult if you're not a big publishing house, but it's not undoable 🙂

As far as that seller goes, if he wants to order, he's free to do it haha 😉

This is what I'd originally assumed, since there's never been an Aluminum 17" iMac.

Arguably, this old offering is worse than letting the Mac mini languish for nearly 2 years.

I wouldn't mind a 17" iMac with a 9400m...add in a 1TB HDD and 4GB RAM and that'd be a pretty nice "family" rig for around a grand!
