The supply chain watchers suggest that Apple is ~3 months away from a gen II iPad launch, and their inventories of refurbs seem to be high enough that they're offering $100 off the refurbs starting today. Available through the Apple store online. The nice thing about Apple refurbs is that they have the full warranty, the refurb iPhones I've bought have had the case and glass replaced as part of the refurbishing...

No discounts on the 3G capable iPads :(

Just looked at the store. The 32GB refurb was $100 discounted, but the 16GB refurb was only $70 discounted.

So still overpriced then?

Depends on the person I suppose. Considering the Galaxy tab costs the same or more, I wouldn't call it terribly overpriced compared to reasonable competition....though one might say the tablet arena is too expensive in general at the moment.

The wife and I just got an iPad as a gift for the Holidays, and I think it's fucking awesome. But if I had to pay for a tablet, I would have probably purchased and modded a Nook Color because I'm cheap.

I just got a color nook, spec wise, it's no comparison, but it does have WiFi. Hopefully will have time to root and hack it this weekend... Just sold my WiFi iPad, will hang onto the 3G model a bit longer, and upgrade to gen II when it's released, unless Netflix flipping releases an Android app.

As I saw one person put it, having a USB port on it would make it so that people would expect it to work as a USB port. And although that is a perfectly reasonable expectation, what do you really think will happen when you hook up a USB scanner? Or a webcam, or a jumpdrive, or a mouse, or really anything beyond an SD card and a keyboard? The camera adapter is expensive, and it would be nicer if it was included, and it does work with some USB devices (namely keyboards and cameras), but having a full USB port, in addition to (I think) being too thick for the iPad, could lead to too many headaches (for Apple and for users).

Haven't they said 'January/1Q11' for this? I know there were some DRM issues they were working out, which basically means the content owners don't want people to watch their content.

I don't care if other USB devices don't work, I'd like to be able to hook a portable harddrive or usb thumb drive without too much hassle.
If Apple can put a USB port on the Macbook Air, they can put one on an Ipad.
With that said, its not a deal breaker for me but I will wait for the Ipad2.

Right, how exactly would an external hard drive or thumbdrive work? What apps would it work with? How would they save to it? What would they save to it? What would be the point of saving to it?

I wouldn't consider the Ipad even a those prices when the Notion Ink tablet is about to show up with better specs and pricing.

1. LCD with Wi-Fi only ($399),
2. LCD with Wi-Fi and 3G ($449),
3. PQ with Wi-Fi only ($449),
4. PQ with 3G and Wi-Fi ($498)

The question is, can they release it before the holiday shopping season is over? Of all the android tablets being released or about to, this one seems to have the most potential to hit it out of the park.

I must admit, I've only played with an ipad briefly here and there.
What if I wanted to quickly transfer some movies or msuic to the ipad ??

Then use iTunes. I am not saying it is ideal, but that is the official answer. Unofficially, maybe a jailbroken app would be able to do something, but it would need the USB port first.

Uh... the 16 gb was already $50 off. This is just $30 less. I went to applestore.com looking for a $350 ipad :(

Are there any downsides to buying a refurbished iPad? I mean, I can't imagine how it could go wrong...

I think Apple refurbs are well regarded in general. Same warranty as new, just cheaper. I guess there's the possibility of some scratch and dent, but I think they're pretty good about fixing aesthetic flaws too.

To the best of my knowledge there are no scratch/dent. If it comes scratched or dented from the warehouse, return it.

Instead of getting a cool box, they usually come in plain cardboard.

If you want something to wow potential clients, fbb, go for it. A web design freelancer friend of mine just uses his for that purpose, and it does a good job at it.

If they do the same thing as with their other refurbs, they typically install new glass and cases on them, they're identical to new, with a full warranty.

I've gotten iPhone refurbs from Apple and they were perfect...

So basically the ipad behaves more like an iphone than a tablet.
Needing to hook up to a computer to transfer everything.
Its still a great tablet but thats a major flaw to me.
Like I said, its not a deal breaker for me especially if the ipad2 comes with higher resolution.

Yeah but 1024x600 on a 10.1" screen is a big downer.
Not when reports say the ipad2 will have higher resolution.
I still like this Acer 7" with 1280x800 and Tegra2 the best.
