I'm limited in my monthly bandwidth, I downloaded Itunes 7 last week, I dig it. the Cover Flow feature is hella cool. the stuttering is errr not cool. So the "update" comes out and I want to check it out. Nice of Apple to just offer a full download (again) I don't need to download QT again, or the whole damn itunes proggy, what happened to UPDATES being UPDATES? More and more companies are getting lazy it seems when it comes to releasing patches that are way huger then they need to be.

@OP: I noticed that too, on other occasions. But I don't know if it was much better in the past.

In some instances I like having the updates being the entire app, since I can download it, scrap the old one, and if I reformat, I can jsut load it without having to update again.

yes, but there should be the update option, or a download full version. it's a little annoying to have to download it again. it's not going to stop me from using itunes, but this seems to be becoming more common. I'm curious as to what the reason is.

all to many programs are distributed with the option of "hey here have a free quicktime player, acrobat, google toolbar, yahoo toolbar, some crap you dont need"

even though that addon is bigger than the program you want, still, one package

itunes + qucktime is the biggest piece of crap you can install on your computer, might even be worse than norton antivirus or, god forbid, norton internet security....

i use free MediaMonkey to sync my music to my ipod and there's also Anapod Explorer its cheap and can also sync videos which is a plus

i've been using my ipod with zero apple software installed for 6 months now and love it

Could you tell us why you think itunes+qt is the biggest piece of crap we can install on our computer? I love it when people make wild claims and don't back it up with the reasons they feel that way. Not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing with you, but I'm just curious as to why.

I personally have no beef with itunes/qt, but just wondering if I should jump on the bandwagon ;)

itunes and qt are resource intensive. that's about the only gripe i have with it. i've never had a problem w/ qt "taking over" my media files as some have used before. the update has now fixed all my audio/video issues. it's a clean, simple all in one program that works. it's saved me loads of headaches trying to explain to normal people how to get their music onto their computers

1. I hate iTunes itself because it's huge, compared to winamp, it takes up a whole screen, and I find the UI unpleasant -- too much 'thinks for you'

2. I hate the latest version of quicktime (7?) -- if I have the old QT (6?) installed, I can go to sites like YTMND and they work fine, but with 7 in, I can't have my browser maximized and have the sound synch up. WTF, I have an athlon 3200+, I should be able to play back audio at full speed.

3. Apple makes me update quicktime to have iTunes installed! I shouldn't need a video codec to copy files to my iPod.

-iTunes and quicktime share code which is why they come together.

-I agree that patching would be better, especially for minor updates. Speak to apple and ask why they chose this method. I recon they have a valid reason, since it would cost them less is users downloaded a ~500k patch as opposed to a ~35Mb file.

-I've never had stuttering: check your network settings.

-Why did you download it 7 times?

what makes those programs you listed the biggest piece of crap you can install? They are created for the typical user who knows nothing about computer. You have to keep in mind that a lot of programs aren't catered towards you.

edit:
hmm. . . damn, i should have read the entire thread first. Well, your opinions are valid, but things like UI space and Memory usage probably doesn't occurr to the majority of computer users.

Network settings nothing. If I have a fully preloaded file, with a tiled animated gif and I have the browser maximized I get horrible stuttering -- to the point of the sound simply cutting out for multiple seconds. If I make the window <800x600 in size, the sound works fine, meanwhile, other apps (even winamp) toodle along fine without freezing. If I roll back to QT6, it works fine fullscreen, but then I can't use my iPod.

1) there's a neat feature that I believe was introduced in windows 3.1. All you do is click on the bottom right of a window with the mouse (thing with two buttons on it plugged into your computer), and move. You'll find the window changes to whatever size you wish. If that still upsets you, you can make it even tinier with the mini player. It is quite small.

2) Sounds like a genuine issue. Does everyone have the same problem? Is it a problem with QT for sure?

3) as I said in an above comment, the two share code, so if you had them separate, they'd take even more space combined.

Personally, I don't care so much about the file size. My machien is old, but is still has a gig of RAM and loads of disk space. 30/40/50 megs isn't a problem for me.

If you want a lightweight music app, go for fubar and one of the QT alternatives.
Enjoy.

Let me try on mine. What preloaded file, and what animated gif? my machine is like, 4 years old with a 2.5 year old windows install...

1) I have two monitors, I keep winamp fully open on monitor #2, so I can just hop over and grab whatever song I want -- but fully opened, it still takes up half a screen, tops. It's a personal aesthetic preference that I am comfortable with winamp and generally don't like the approach the iTunes software takes. I fully accept that it's a personal thing.

2) My roommate last year, on a completely different computer but with firefox and iTunes had the same issue.

3) I can't use QT alternative because of the aforementioned issues with iTunes forcing a quicktime install.

I just read the first few replies, so forgive me if this has already been said. But I think the OP needs to direct his anger at his limited bandwidth, not Apple. Who the fvck has limited bandwidth nowadays?

i agree mostly but i'm gonna justify myself for everyone else

true, itunes IS indeed catered to less computer savvy users and i suppose its ok for them but i just don't like how intrusive the whole experience is.

first of all, why the hell do you have to install qucktime player for itunes to work? there's no correlation unless maybe the qt engine is used to playback movies in itunes but either way it shouldn't be obligatory.

bloat. i hate bloat. itunes is huge, itunes 7 is even worse. it is a super heavy program that eats up your screen space and memory and isn't really that great in terms of features. the music store is so obtusive and annoying.

on the average user's computer it make so much of a difference when you install itunes or not because it loads so many services, "itunes helper" etc and also quicktime is set to autorun and also to automatically check for updates and most avg users wouldn't even know how to stop that. most avg users will also leave everything default when installing and make itunes the default media player which they might not like.

the fact that you have to have everything updated for it to work is also annoying.

all in all i think its a bloated, poorly-coded program that's way too obtrusive and generally degrades the quality of your windows experience once installed. also why won't they let you copy songs from your ipod to your itunes? if you try hard enough you can figure out a way so why make thigns difficult for everyone? also automatic synchronization as soon as ipod cable is connected sucks i know a lot of ppl who 'lost' a good chunk of their music collection like this.

that said, it did introduce some nice features like podcasts, smart playlists etc but for example i prefer anapod explorer. its very lightweight and unobtrusive but admitedly not so easy for newbies to learn. you can do everything itunes can and then some with that program.

mediamonkey for example is a great little program too. sure it takes up most of the screen too but its a much better music library organizer/jukebox so that's ok for me at least. you can easily sync music back and forth and rate and create smart playlists in the exact same way...

i guess im a little biased but i have beef with QT player for a long time and i uninstalled itunes after a week.

thats my $0.02

I had a bunch of issues right after upgrading to iTunes 7. Checked out the apple support forums and tried just about everything under the sun. What ended up (I believe) working for me was updating the audio drivers for my motherboard. Asus didn't have a newer set, so I downloaded some WHQL-compliant AC'97 audio drivers, installed, and everything was a.o.k. Given the number of people with pretty severe audio glitches, I'm assuming that they have, or will have soon, issued a patch/update.

I use WINAMP with Ipod plug in to manage my Ipod.

Just did not like the whole authorize computer thing with itunes.

Also did not like the idea of using only one computer for 1 ipod.
