Apple is now a sapphire manufacturer

The purple haze had nothing to do with the sapphire. It was due to the lens design, as evidenced by the fact that the 5s doesn't have the purple haze.

I think the smart money on this one is for a watch.

I think otherwise.

I think we are going to see the design of the iPhone 4 come back with the iPhone 6, with an ALU frame on the sides and sapphire front and back panels. A thin and light layer of sapphire is stronger than both the corning glass and the aluminum back they use in the current design. This is how they are going to beat the 112g of the iPhone 5, perhaps making the phone even thinner than it is now, and virtually indestructible.

Pure sapphire is colorless; the blue normally associated with sapphire comes from impurities in the crystal. So synthetic sapphire without added impurities should be clear. Sapphire, BTW, is made from aluminum. Transparent aluminum, anyone?

So we'll actually be able to send humpback whales into the future?

Sapphire glass is likely making it into a future iPhone. Imagine something that only diamond can scratch! (Sapphire is rated as a 9 on the Mohs scale; with Diamond being 10 and roughly twice as hard).

I wonder how expensive it actually is to manufacture though.

so that's why chicks dig diamonds

with an ALU frame on the sides

They're going to outsource their frames to Alcatel-Lucent (stock symbol ALU)?

Or perhaps the frame will incorporate an arithmetic logic unit?

I know what you meant, but that is a really weird way to say aluminum.

what happened to liquid metal ?

Sapphire crystal is already being used in jewelry watches. It makes the most sense to me that this is for their next iWatch. Eventually all smartphones will be sporting sapphire crystal though. Don't let GG fool ya that its better than sapphire.

I think this move has a bit to do with SS buying a chunk of Corning as well. It's never a good thing to rely on competitors for your parts.

I think this is a coincidence. Although it is a good idea for Apple to get away from GG. Its funny, Apple was the one that put GG on the map in 2007.

Yea, the story about how GG came into being is an interesting one. As I recall, Corning had actually developed it back in the 70s or 80s, but shelved it as there wasn't any real demand for that sort of thing back then. When Apple went looking for suppliers, and Jobs had decided that the screen had to be glass (it was plastic until about 6-12 months before launch as I recall), he himself went to KY to talk to the head guy(s?) at Corning. That's what got Gorilla Glass production up and running again. I would love to see a breakdown on Corning's sales, see how much Gorilla Glass accounts for today.

Too bad I used my 2-year upgrade on the 5 and then sold it 🙁 Ah well, there's always the 6! :awe:

You know, I actually did use that thing once or twice. My 3GS would occasional forget it had a SIM and force me to pull it out and put it back in.

Funny, I had that happen on a 4S recently at work. Out of the blue, after a year of use.

While its true that SS now owns ~9% of Corning, they do not sit on the board and they have no vetoing rights and get no inside information or exclusivity on anything per the deal that was made. the deal really just allows Corning to use the SCP facility to produce products for more things, It was limited to LCD TVs ONLY and S.Korea ONLY before. Now they can manuf anything for anywhere there
