Apple iPad (3), bought in US- can purchase a Telcel SIM for it?

I'm curious if this will work. I'm seriously interested in buying a new iPad but will only spring for the 4G model if I can take it to Mexico and use it there with their iPad data providers. If it's somehow locked into the US VZW/ATT thing being a US model, I'm not going to bother. I found this rather old thread on the issue but I'd like a confirmation if possible. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=916982

Otherwise I'm thinking a white 32GB 4G iPad is in my future. 🙂

Swing by an Apple store, there are a couple in downtown Chicago, and another at Oakbrook.

Aye, Lincoln Park and the Michigan Ave store. I visit them both semifrequently. Never been out in Oakbrook unless I'm just passing through, usually past the burbs entirely or a beeline to Frys.

We were just doing some shopping on State tonight and I wanted to stop by but like most weekends, shoe shopping got priority (not for me). I'll take the el up to the Michigan Ave store tomorrow and find out.. if the answer is yes I'll just get what I want on the spot.

All right. When I went to the Apple Store website and tried to buy an iPad. When you go to step 3 it lets you choose a network carrier, underneath the option is the following:

Both the ATT and Verizon model of iPad can roam worldwide on GSM/UMTS networks. In countries without compatible 4G LTE networks, the new iPad will operate on GSM network technologies such as HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. When you travel internationally, you can use a micro-SIM card from a local carrier.

Man, Fry's? You have a Microcenter right there on Ogden, it is closer to you than Fry's is. I have been to that Fry's maybe a half dozen times since I moved out here, I can seldom find what I am looking for, and haven't ever had a sales person come up and ask me if I needed any assistance.
