Back when we outlined the iOS 4 features missing from iPhone 3G, we forgot one key bullet point: performance. As more and more two-year veterans of Apple's phones have taken the plunge and upgraded to the latest firmware, slowdown and battery drain issues have become a common complaint, which is even more irksome when you think of just how little the update really adds to the UI. The Wall Street Journal reports speaking to an Apple spokesperson who said the company is looking into the matter. That doesn't necessarily mean a fix is coming anytime soon, but hey, at least you can hold the darn thing however you want.

Anyone else's 3G really slow after upgrading to iOS4??? My brother got an iPhone4, gave his 3G to his gf and put iOS4 on it and it's super studdery and really slow and sometimes won't even pick up calls. My other friend that upgraded his 3G can barely pick up and calls and gets crappy battery life.

I read disabling spotlight will seriously speed up a 3G running iOS4 (Settings->General->Spotlight and untick everything). My 3GS doesn't get the stupid slowdowns anymore when I did this. And I used spotlight maybe 2 times in the last year, so I don't care about it. They might give it a try?

Wasn't Godless Astronomer complaining about this? I believe that was an iPod Touch but probably the same issue.

If you have this problem, do a DFU restore on the phone to 4.0 instead of a normal "update", and then as someone else already said - turn off the spotlight features.
