Apple II GS Start Up disk...

Does anyone have one of these? I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to Apple computers, but a buddy of mine has just bought one of these computers for his son, as a starter system and can't get past a certain point on boot up, and the system keeps calling for the Start Up Disk. Can anyone help me out with this?
