I have the chance to pick up an Apple Ibook with a 500 megahertz processor. 320 megs of RAM, 10 gig hard drive, and a wireless card. All of this is for $50. I know this is a great deal. Does any have any experience with these types of laptops and the quality of them. Also, if I make a word document on a PC is it possible to transfer it to the Apple so I can edit it on that? Thanks alot for your replies.

Yes, that is a great laptop and a great deal. But, you may want to look at this. Certain iBooks with certain serial numbers had defective logic boards. But, if yours is one of the problematic one's, Apple will fix it, free of charge.

If you make a word document on a PC and transfer it to the Apple, yes, you can edit it on the iBook. If you have Appleworks, it can also open word documents, though I would choose Word over Appleworks anyday.

Laptops on sale for $50 each

A unique opportunity is available from Henrico County Public Schools. Used Apple iBook laptop computers will be on sale for $50 each, with a one-per-person limit. The one-day sale will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

One thousand laptops will be sold at the school warehouse ? 361 Dabbs House Road beside the Eastern Government Center ? on a first-come, first-serve basis, with no waiting list. Only cash or checks will be accepted.

The white, Power PC 750s with 12-inch screens have 320 megabytes of memory and are installed with the AppleWorks Operating System.

From Interstate 64, take exit 193B. Travel east on Nine Mile Road and turn left at the second stoplight on Dabbs House Road. The warehouse is on the right.

I've never seen the "AppleWorks Operating System" before. Must be some super-secret technology. :D

cerebusPu--->Yup that is the deal that I am hoping to snatch up. Its been all over the news and in the newspaper, so even with 1000 laptops, I am a little worried as to my chances of being able to get one.

And OpenOffice.org works too. I would choose OpenOffice.org over Microsoft Office anyday.

I haven't used OpenOffice.org myself so I can't comment on it. I have read that OpenOffice.org is great and many would prefer to use it over Microsoft Office. Another positive is that OpenOffice is free.

Link I believe you have to have X11 installed to use OpenOffice. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

There are two options for Mac OS X users. You can either install the regular OpenOffice.org suite, and as you had said you do need to install X11. Or you may install the OOo version ported to be a native OS X application, called NeoOffice. NeoOffice is available here.

There are some differences between the two versions but for the most part they're the same.

Wow, what a boondoggle. Why don't they just give them away instead of selling them for a small fraction of their market value.

we just began using neo office and i have to say i like it a lot more than open office.
things have gone between my pc version of word and neo at work so much easier than they did in open.
i should also mention that in tiger (one OS i know it is true with.) i was able to open and edit word docs in TextWhatever that comes packed in the OS with only slight justification differences.

Are you talking about TextEdit? MS Word docs have worked in that since Panther (but now there's table support among other things).

I can't stand using anything requiring X11. It's just so un-Mac OS X-like. ;)

Mind you, I'm not a huge fan of NeoOffice either (except for the price). I bought MS Office.

screwd01-->If you were still planning on coming down here to get a laptop, you can change those plans. They changed the sale so it is only available to residents who live in Henrico County(the county where the laptops were used).
