Apple hints at 'Product Transition' and a new product coming soon

Apple's financial results conference call today was littered with references to future products coming from Apple. While some degree of optimism ("very excited about future") is the norm during these financial results calls, there was more discussion than usual about possible new products in today's results.

Steve Jobs first suggests in the initial press release that Apple is "busy finishing several more wonderful new products to launch in the coming months."

Meanwhile, in the conference call, Apple executives repeated referred to a "product transition" that may affect Q4 revenue numbers. Typically, "product transitions" represent existing product line revisions. In this case, the MacBook and MacBook Pro have been widely expected to be revised in the coming months with both models starting to approach the end of their lifecycles. Intel has conveniently released a new processor and chipset that could be used in the new Apple laptops.

Apple also described their formula of introducing "state of the art new products at prices their competitors can't match". They describe that these new products introduce new "technologies and features" (like the iPhone) justifying their initial higher prices. Over time, they expect to to take advantage of scale and engineering to drive prices down. Apple suggested that they would follow this formula again and are "very excited" about what they have in their new product pipeline. Rumors have suggested that Apple may introduce a 12" or 13" Mac tablet later this year (September or October). Another possibility includes rumors of a smaller PDA-like device that is 1.5x larger than the existing iPhone.

Oooooo, curious to see how the rumors pan out for this one...

I must say, as a lifelong PC user, i'm getting more and more tempted to step over to the dark side. 🙂 The iphone and now the iphone 3G just redefine simplicity and functionality. My next laptop just may be a Mac.

Fingers crossed for a headless Mac.

Please Steve, or I'll buy a Hackintosh instead.

A decent replacement for my mac mini would be nice indeed...

Agreed. I'm waiting for a Mini replacement as well. I might just go iMac and use that monitor for something else, though.

Although analysts are often FoS, I'm with the Piper Jaffray speculation of a $999 MacBook to spur sales through the holidays. (Excluding PCs), it would be a magical price point for an Apple laptop and if they kept it at 2.1 GHz/1GB/120GB, they're hardly sacrificing any margin as component costs go down. Almost all customers are better off with the mid-model upsell anyway.

You could make about the same argument for a $499 Mac mini, except that Apple simply doesn't care about the few units it sells of the mini.

they should drop the entry macbook down in price or up the price. $1100 for a laptop with 1gb of ram, no dvd burner, and a relatively small hdd is pretty pathetic.
