Title says it all. Seems pretty nice to me. OS X is a good OS for schools. eMac Specs are there. This is for education ONLY.

Can we start out with a post saying "macs suck"?

Yes it is more expensive than the old iMac is now. I'm sure that is because the components are more expensive. The eMac is a much better computer than the old iMac.

500mhz G3 --> 700mhz G4
15inch CRT ---> 17inch flat CRT
lots of other things

HUH? what software? are you talking about the pro stuff like Final Cut Pro? That isn't really for education. The education stuff is all free. with the exception of a sys admin tool.

Oh yeah, and schools get large discounts (30-45%) when they buy in bulk.

Macs in schools "for education" make zero sense to me. 9 times out of 10 these kids will be using a Wintel machine in the work world. Why train them on an obscure machine like a Mac?

macs suck. i mean, i use computers to webbrowse a lot. and macs are slow at webbrowsing. wired even did an article on it. likes it takes a mac twice as long to render pages in IE because of stuff they rushed in os X and will iron out over the next couple of years.

article is here http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,51926,00.html

if anyone cares.

i dunno i was using a g4 at the clicc lab here at ucla, and it was slow as hell to browse anands. and its on a t3. like i'd hit reply on a PM and it would take like 5 seconds for the window to go away, not to mention it would stall the whole system. those were the gray translucent towers, but it was using os9. i used the g3 imac with os x and that thing is just painfully slow at everything. i also tried the new lamp looking g4 imacs at another lab, and though better, it was still waaaay slower than an 600mhz or so p3 was in the labs with dells, and an 600mhz p3 isnt exactly state of the art.

but i was on subscriber servers, it was still slow. like when you click reply to something you cant do anything else while it sits there like thinking or something for 5 seconds.

Although macs aren't as fast as PCs for websurfing a lot can be done to fix them. For starters IE is extreemly slow. Which makes it really funny that a microsoft rep is quoted saying how slow macs are at browsing. Mozilla is MUCH faster. In any event, they aren't too slow that it bothers me. I'm sure with 10.2 we will see the same large speed increases that occured with 10.1

Macs seriosly suck, No matter what they tell you, they are still slower at anything except photoshop. Anyone here use Matlab, i.e THE software all engineers and mathematitians should have, Basically it takes a whole lot longer to execute complex calculations on a Mac then on a PC, don't give me any crap about optimizations because this is simple raw math I am talking about. Ornery has a very good point, why use Imacs for education when PC's are mainstream are more likely to be used in the future. As for the I-macs surfing problem, I am inclined to believe its a hardware issue else such a major problem would have been fixed already, that or apple is dummer then I thought.

Wow, so much Macs suck!

Do any of you that say they suck own a recent one? All machines in a lab run kinda junky....I should know, one of my jobs is maintaining the computer systems for a small liberal arts school. I'll tell you this, we repair 10 PCs for every one Mac.....and we have more Macs on this campus.

If you want stability, I still say nothing beats OSX. Sorry guys. I have an Athlon XP running WinXP too......but I take any of my 3 Macs over it anyday. Never had a single issue with any of those machines......infact, none of my current machines, barring the PC, have ever been rebooted......well, besides for updating the OS, of course. I put OS X Server on a 533MHz G4, great running machine. Handles the load of print serving, QTSS, Apple File Sharing, FTP, Samba, Windows Services....etc, etc, etc..........never stops working, never had a crash, nothing..........On the other hand, my XP Box decided it no longer wants to burn CDs.........

I think its a little rediculous to say this sucks and that sucks.........

Anyway, the eMac is cool. Getting that G4 processor is pretty big. Getting a G4 allows you to use any sort of software you desire at full speed. Most higher end apps are designed to take full advantage of the G4's Altivec Engine. The new Titanium is pretty impressive too!!

Also, for your thoughts, we do have Final Cut Pro on all of our Apple machines campus wide. It's a great medium for working group projects in.......or iMovie. That is another nice thing about Apple......the software titles that come with them! iMovie, iTunes, iDVD, iPhoto.....I've used them all and gotten great results! Making an iPhoto book is a great gift!

Not too bad for sucking! ;)

From the Wired article:

<< Several correspondents asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation by Mac zealots, who have been known to e-mail 1,000 or more harangues to the work addresses of those who criticize the huggable device. >>
