apple G3 or Pentium 3

hello OS and other components aside what is the best overall perfoming cpu between Apples G3 @800mhz or Intel Pentium 3 @ 800mhz. I am looking at geting a labtop and it seems for about the same price the two are very close.

i hear the apple laptops are nice but overpriced and thus not really as good of a price/performance deal as say a P3

also the performance edge will be highly dependent on which programs you intend to run on this laptop

i personally would go with the P3 tualatin based laptop if you choose to go the P3 route

I will be doing the standard stuff like surfing the net, working with office docs, playing dvd's, and posibly using photoshop on it.

The PIII. You're crazy if you buy an Apple, if you plan on using it for anything besides Photoshop or video editing.

As a former owner of a P3-800eb chip and a current owner of a G4 powerbook at 867mhz, the P3 is hands down faster. I only use my PB to surf the net and type documents, and that is all it is really good for. It is nice and small though. Also keep in mind that Apple OS's eat ram for breakfast. I would say that a pc with 256 runs similarly to a mac with 512 or even 768. Keep that in mind while shopping. The macs are nice to be sure, but a pc is way cheaper and faster.

Yep.

Apples = great for digital design and video editing

Intel or AMD = great for everything else

I just noticed something a bit interesting here were a P2 at 450mhz outperforms a G3 at 400mhz. Now there is a 50mhz diff but that is because the G3 didnt come in a 450mhz module.
