Why do that when they could just cut $50 off the price of a Fire sell another few million units?

Amazon is already very probably losing at least a little money on each Fire sold, hoping to make up the difference on content. Cutting the price by $50... that is like the TouchPad fire sale, sure they moved eleventy billion units in a week, but they took a huge bath on all of them.

The problem that the other smartphone OEMs are probably having is that with the exception of Samsung, Apple isn't just the only one making any money, they are the ones making all the money, or at least a hugely disproportionate cut of it.

I wont be happy till apple releases the ipad 7" or tops an ipad 8". If I need something huge like a laptop, I'll buy a laptop. I had the ipad, then fooled into upgrading to the ipad2 (which still sits in the box seldom used). As far as siri, give me a break. My iphone 4s had siri and its next to useless. Maybe something to humor the kids, or make fun of on TV comedy sitcoms, but thats about it.
Come-on apple... ipad 7".

Pretty much same here. It's still too heavy to hold comfortably in one hand.

And yeah, Siri is pretty useless because it still can't reliably understand you...90% of the time I could have gotten done what I wanted done faster and more reliably with the touchscreen. Surprised it didn't make it in though.

Question.. if i get the VZ 4G LTE edition, can i use 3G (GSM) when I am abroad (If i get a local SIM card)?

I currently have the ATT 3g ipad2 and it worked great when i was abroad. I know I could not use the VZ 3g Ipad, but i'm not sure if "the new ipad" 4g lte is also carrier locked.

hanks.

I think internationally, both VZW and ATT iPad3's are the same. The VZW iPad3 has all of the same radios as the ATT one plus an additional CDMA radio.

BTW the name new ipad is fvcking idiotic.

"new iPad" is not the name, it's just called iPad. It seems they're going back to the way they named every other product before the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. There was never an iPod 3 or iPod Nano 2. It was just iPod or iPod Nano, and people differentiated by calling them first generation, second generation or 1G, 2G. No big deal.

Unofficially naming them by year like with MacBooks is probably going to make more sense going forward.

Regarding the name, I think it's worth noting that "new iPad" is just the term they throw around at the keynote. And I believe they do so because they don't want to drag numericals around while they are on stage.

The official name is not "iPad" for sure. On my order confirmation, it's "iPad (3rd Generation)". So there is still a 3 in there. I reckon they just didn't want to throw "3" around so much. Imagine the keynote 10 years from now...

"The iPad 13 is the newest addition to our family!"

Compare that to...

"The new iPad has been added to our family!"

Which one sounds less cumbersome?

I think they are simply thinking about long-term, and about how they have to keep coming out with a new iPad every year... it'll be pretty silly to keep adding numbers to it. "iPad 20, and iPhone 24"... right?

The official name is iPad. Just look at the iPod nano. They list it everywhere as the iPod nano but it's the iPod nano (6th Generation).

I agree that Siri is pretty useless. I seldom use it on my iPhone. Can't think of a reason to use it on my iPad. You'll tell it to text Bob that "I'm on my way" and it will come up with Text Joe "Bombs Away", or something dumb like that. I think it does learn overtime the more you use it though. However, I think voice control is still in its infancy.

I think it was a great idea for them to drop the iPad numbers. It looks like Apple is in it with their iPads for the long haul.

What blows my mind are all the people who are "disappointed". In just a year, they've upgraded pretty much everything inside and outside the iPad. It has more pixels than a 1080p HDTV. It's faster in every respect, has a better camera, can take and stream 1080p video, and has 4G LTE. It hasn't lost any battery life. Apple's releasing free updates to all of their productivity apps and releasing a pretty amazing photo editing app for $5.
What would it take to not be disappointing? A built-in Fleshlight? An automatic filter for idiot internet comments?

Agree with this ^

I'll take the built-in fleshlight.

But in all seriousness, it could have included a flash.

Is it just me or are they still available? I thought the iPad 2 sold out much quicker. If this keeps up how am I suppose to make money on the sheeple who want one when they are sold out?

Try to place the pre-order and you'll suddenly see estimates have slipped into the week after launch, and some models have slipped all the way to two weeks later.

The reason why it seems like it's available is because the pre-order page is static, and so... the estimates on there are just... images. You only get the real estimates when you have placed the pre-order.

And dates started slipping around late last night, I believe. Good thing I got my order in the first few minutes.

Yep. And then add in all the delays before you even find out if it got anywhere near what you're saying, and it's even more useless.

When I can just look at and address my phone casually and it knows I'm talking to it and can *instantly* respond with what I need 99% of the time, then it's worth something. Right now its still little more than a cute tech demo.

Not to mention the voice controlled GPS still doesn't work for locations outside the US.

I ended up cancelling my iPad 3 preorder. After sleeping on it, I couldn't justify it. I'll stick with my iPad 1.

Yeah, I have a friend who just never deletes anything. He's always flying through pages trying to find an app and I'm just like 'USE THE SEARCH!!!'

But I keep my devices paired down to Apps that I use on a constant basis. Usually a handful of games. Got a 64GB iPad 2 last go-round and never crossed less than 50GB free.

Heh, I've only become used to using the search about a month ago after thinking about how much time I waste looking through apps.

I think I've decided that I'll hold off for now. I'll probably wait to see if AT&T goes through with their talks of possibly providing a shared data plan between devices. I'd pay $15 extra a month to add my Vita and iPad onto the plan, but I sure as hell will not pay an extra $15-30 for one device that I may use the connection randomly.

It's also worthwhile to consider that AT&T doesn't even have LTE in my area, but Verizon does. AT&T's roll-out has been pretty slow as it is, so I don't know if they'll even have LTE here before the next iPhone comes out.

The reason why it seems like it's available is because the pre-order page is static, and so... the estimates on there are just... images. You only get the real estimates when you have placed the pre-order.

Is it static? If you select White and 64GB LTE, it will show the AT&T version as "Ships by: March 19".

I ordered 2 black 32gig WIFI only. The process was so slow, and I got kicked back to the selection screen twice, not realizing there was 2 in my cart. Oops. By the time it finally let me checkout, it was going so slowly it wouldn't let me edit the cart.

So presumably I can sell the other one or return it if needed.

But now I'm wondering...should I have gotten the 64 gig version? Should I have gotten a 4G version? The free tethering sounds really, really nice, but I'm not sure I'd want to go with Verizon (their coverage in the part of LA I live in is WAY worse than AT&T). I guess I can return both, if need be.

I'm just anxious to see the screen up close. Honestly, I'm the one weirdo who'll mainly be using it for an eReader for PDFs (with a secondary use as a travel computer). I don't really need a couch-puter, and I guess maybe it'll work as a bed-puter, but I have a $2000 macbook pro that works pretty well for that, so we'll see.

If I don't like the workflow of reading scientific PDFs on it, it's going back. For example, when I have a hard copy, I'm often looking at two pages at the same time; often a reference in text (refer to figure 4 for rates of blah blah blah, and see how blah blah blah) and the actual page the figure is on. If swiping back and forth or whatever it'll take to do that process bugs me, I'm gonna be disappointed.
