Can someone explain the "twice as fast, 56x as fast" thing? How does this compare to the iPhone 5 in CPU and GPU performance.

I think 56x means the theoretical/potential speed after moving to 64bit. Expect to see a 2x speed increase in CPU/GPU until we get real benches.

2 times as fast CPU wise and 5 times as fast GPU wise compared to the iPhone 5. 56 times is related to the original iPhone.

I guess that hints that PowerVR Rogue is being used.

2x CPU and 2x GPU over the A6.

56x refers to the original iphone

Hmmm... I'm liking the 5S, at least when you consider that the 5C isn't cheap, but do I really want to spend $800 on an off-contract 32 GB 5S? Ouch. That's more than I spent on my last (used) MacBook.

Yea no shot for me. I'll stick with the iP5.

Also I am still unsure whether or not the iOS7 camera app processing improvements carry over to the iP5, or they are a 5S exclusive. Terrible presentation or terrible live blog...

It's not 5 times faster GPU... look at the graph

5x GPU performance is so, so badass and OpenGL 3.0 tips the scales for me. Can't wait.

So, no major update to the camera except for dual flash and some SW additions? Lame.

Just got out of a work meeting, missed everything! Arg! So the 5S seems to be missing:

* 128GB
* NFC
* 802.11ac
* LTE-Advanced
* Higher megapixels
* RAM upgrade
* Larger screen

So the 5 is now the 5C, just in plastic version? And basically we just have a faster 5 with a fingerprint sensor?

Will I ever live to see the day where at huge phone announcements like this one they publish the actual prices of the different phones instead of the contract prices?

I understand that for most people (in the US) it's the only way they'll buy a phone, but for me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one in the world) these contract prices mean absolutely nothing.

There are sister presentations that will happen half-a-day from now I believe.

Pretty much. The whole event could've been covered in less than 2 minutes:

"Hey, we're replacing the iPhone 5 with the iPhone 5c. It's now plastic but in different colors. Here's a case for it. We're also adding the iPhone 5s. Three different "colors", comes with iOS7, which you already knew. We also changed some minor things with the camera that you probably won't notice. We also added a fingerprint scanner that just works. Here's a case for it. Have a good day."

Hmm... no new iPad models? The iPad 2 is getting long in the tooth, and they really need to replace that sucker.

I was looking for a ship date of the new Mac Pro as well... they are still saying "later this year". Hmm.

what I got out of that was...

a faster 5, with finger print sensor/dual flash/better camera sensor

+ iWork, which as described only comes with new phones.

The camera is the same 8MP, but its sensor is 15% larger. The dual flash is white/amber combo that can gauge natural ambient light. The photos are going to look a lot better.

This event was just iPhone. iPads and Macs are this fall.

Ah. I'll also keep hoping that Apple will finally sell these out in the US directly (full price, unlocked) at release date instead of having people wait a few months.

they said you can preorder the 5c on the 13th, not the 5s. they just said the 5s comes out on the 20th but i didn't hear if you could preorder it beforehand. i'm going to be on vacation down in the keys on the 20th (which is also my 5 year anniversary heh), so it would be nice to preorder it before and just have it when i get home.

It's a speed bump with a few tweaks here and there. I don't know why people always get fooled into thinking these S models will have major redesigns. That's never been the case.

It's not a bad phone. iOS 7 is probably the most important new feature. The consumer ARM 64-bit CPU will have big implications a few years when tablets start hitting the 4GB ceiling. I felt the fingerprint scanner was a bit gimmicky though. I can see how it could be useful but it's not really that big a deal for me.

One thing I was surprised to see is they're still making a 16GB model for their flagship phone.

Good to hear they'll continue supporting the 4S, meaning iOS7 probably won't bog it down. I've still got one year left on my contract. Hopefully the jailbreak won't take too long so I can keep using SD cards to transfer files on my iPad. This is sort of the problem with iOS for me. There's legit stuff I want to do but I have to jailbreak to do it.

I didn't say they only publish the full prices and let people wonder about the contract prices. Just show it right there next to the contract prices, e.g. iPhone 5C 16 GB - $99 ($400 off contract).

It's not that hard. Plus, I think this type of event is Apple's show, not AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. I think it's appropriate for Apple to publish the prices they're actually selling these phones for, instead of the prices the carriers are going to sell them after subsidizing the prices in return for contract commitments.
