We never should have let Big Tech become Big Media. Good of John to take the L and walk rather than compromise for corporate PR. In a perfect world he’d be returning to the Daily Show, but you can never go home again. I’m sure he’ll be back somewhere.

“Members of the show’s staff were informed about its end on Thursday. Taping of episodes for the third season was scheduled to begin within a couple of weeks, one of the people said.”

“Mr. Stewart and Apple executives had disagreements over some of the topics and guests on “The Problem,” two of the people said. Mr. Stewart told members of his staff on Thursday that potential show topics related to China and artificial intelligence were causing concern among Apple executives, a person with knowledge of the meeting said. As the 2024 presidential campaign begins to heat up, there was potential for further creative disagreements, one of the people said.”

What The FUCK

Only one recourse, Jon runs for president, wins, and fucks Apple right back.

Well I for one am shocked that Apple would have myopic and "my way is the only right way" views that extend beyond the tech it sells. /s

If AI wasn't mentioned, I would have thought that this was a simple case of Jon Stewart straying a little too close to sweatshops in the far east and Apple didn't like that.

On the plus side, I'd say his show stands a better chance of finding a network elsewhere now that it's had some air time already and (at least from my perception) is generally well regarded on social media. On the other hand, the money/influence holders in this world probably don't like him very much.

I never understood why he partnered with Evil Corp. in the first place.

He's probably used to the concept that in order to get broadcasted you've got to co-operate with someone rich. I'm just wondering if he could broadcast effectively without it these days.

You mean like on Youtube like everyone can?

Perhaps, but I'm pretty sure YouTube would employ the carrot and stick to ensure that he signs up to something more than will benefit them to a greater degree.

I noticed that YT premium offers access to some other streaming services; I wonder if that deal comes with a proviso that YT won't branch out to providing exclusive premium content themselves. - edit - this para is incorrect. I was reading here:

"For instance, one streaming service on the Primetime Channels list is Paramount+. Through YouTube, you can subscribe to Paramount+ for the same price you would through its native app."
great...

This is shitty of Apple, who I'm starting to worry about after this and whatever is going on with them and Twitter. They were actually making some moves that made them seem like the better choice as far as privacy and other (they weren't jumping on the AI hype train). To be fair some of that (like switching all their stuff to USB C) was basically mandated. But There's some worrying aspects and if they're gonna start behavior like this then they're basically opening the door to being controlled by all the worst assholes in the world.

As for Jon Stewart, I wish he'd do something more worthwhile with his time than talk shows. People saying to run for President I think are delusional, although maybe I'm mistaken, but I can't imagine he wants that job at all.

Was gonna point out that all it allows is you to pay to subscribe but watch on YouTube, but seems like you noticed that.

Which honestly that alone is actually meaningful instead of having 10 different apps for every service, all of which have a mix of options for settings such as quality settings and captions (Hulu's closed captions are straight up garbage - at least through web browser - like is seconds off of what is being said onscreen, and often is borderline nonsense) and one bill. But unfortunately it won't save you any money.

Also, YouTube seems likely to be about to take a hard turn into really shitty behavior. Looks like they're gonna start clamping down on Ad-Blocking, which chances are they're going to start embedding ads in videos in an attempt to force people to pay for Premium. And I bet they have to start getting aggressive about that due to the deals with other streaming services.

This is the same shit we were worrying about with Elon. Which reminds me of the situation we are in with Saudi oil. It’s like we can’t help making deals with the devils.

That's what happens to multinationals from free countries with exposure to dictatorships. They know in free countries the government won't likely retaliate but a dictatorship likely will, so the safe thing to do is to pander to dictators.

That's part of what makes him well-suited for it, IMO. For some people it's the fulfillment of a long-held ambition, for him it would be more of a sacrifice to make for the good of the nation.

I know this sounds odd but Jon Stewart and Tucker Carlson on the same show would be gold.

Letting them debate the issues. I would pay to watch

Been there done that, Tucker has been trying to dig himself out of that KO for 20 years or something.

I think this is less Apple being evil, and Apple not wanting to any type of wave to piss off the left or the right. They want to just keep collecting the Apple tax.

My personal opinion is, Apple loses tons of brownie points cancelling Stewart. They could have gained a lot of credibility by being able to tackle difficult subjects in a fair and open manner.
