I need to price out an iMac for one of the radiologists at my hospital, and I'll need quotes from at least 3 sources to do this.

Other than printing out shopping cart quotes from macmall and the apple store, are there any other (preferably business oriented) recommended sites that sell macs? I looked at CDWG, and they list an Apple BTO that I suspect is what we want, but there are no details at all about the listing, so I can't use it.

You might want to visit an Apple store and talk to a biz rep there, as they can sometimes offer preferred pricing. Or at least call them and explore the option.

Yeah, I figure I'll have to do that. Just wanted to get a "baseline" of sorts.

The iMac that's listed for sale is BTO (Built to Order) basically base model that's been upgraded.

They took the high end option, changed it to an i7 2.93Ghz, added 8GB in a 2x4GB config.. Price is $2,599 ($2,439 Edu discount) this way. Probably a bulk order for them and they'd be making ~$100/ea turn around.

Powermax.com can avoid taxes/shipping for you.

One thing I will say is, directly from Apple will probably get it to you the cheapest route.

Yeah, I know what it is...but a lack of detailed listing won't fly with the purchasing dept *shrug*. I'm confident you're all right that speaking with an Apple biz rep will be the best route. I appreciate the suggestions and help.

there's not much margin in mac products. apple doesn't give it to anyone. alot of big companies (ahem microcenter) will run a loss leader like the 13" macbook pro but that is really selling below cost hoping you'll buy the products that have margin (iwork, office 2011, applecare).

One of the reasons you can negotiate price on applecare (And that is ALL) at an apple store.

Warranties even applecare follow the device not the owner. so an open-box isn't a bad idea but most business don't want to deal with refurb/open-box since statistically it really doesn't pan-out.

You sure you don't want something nice like a panasonic U1 or whatever that tablet is - germ resistant case - I can only imagine trying to clean a mac would be a nightmare.

I'd rather have a separate display from the computer. Nice EIZO - the monitor apple sells isn't the best out there. And radiology? unless you are transcribing i'd think you'd want some really nice monotones for CT/MRI/etc.

The Rads have tricked out and calibrated reading rooms for clinical stuff, so I'm not worried about that. This is more for light image processing for his research studies. This Rad likes and wants a mac, so I'm doing my best to give him want he wants. It really makes no difference to me. To be fair, I know he like running Osirix which is by far the best freeware PACs client I've come across, but only available for OSX.
