wow... read this "if you opted for a custom-built Macbook, you are out of luck. "Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival," Apple's sales and refunds policy states."

ouch

We need a sticky: "How to become an Apple fanboy"

1. Never never, never, ever buy 1st products (you = beta tester)
2. Apple doesn't care about you. Enjoy the products and the community.
3. Apple will always give you 99% of what you want. You'll have an iPhone, but no MMS. You'll have a 13" Macbook, but no Firewire. You'll have a 15" Macbook Pro, but no Matte Screen option. You will always be on the verge of awesomeness and thus be forced to upgrade continually in hopes of a brighter tomorrow.

This is why Apple tools continue to pay through the ass for inferior products? Remind me, was it because of the superior build quality, or the great customer service?

I've always questioned the so-called "build quality" of Apple devices. I currently have a 13" white plastic Macbook. It's uh...plastic. And it's more durable than their Pro line. I had a 15" LED Macbook Pro before (which I sold to build my first Hackintosh) and it was weak. The alumimum scratched easy (cheapest metal on earth haha) and you could dent it all you wanted. My sister-in-law's 15" MBP is dented and scratched like crazy, and she keeps it on a desk all day! I'd rather than Thinkpad build quality, just paint it silver, Apple. lol.

Tell that to my friend with the 14" Thinkpad T-Series. It creaks, the keyboard is not up to the standards that I had expected from Lenovo with regards to its rigidity, it flexes just like every other laptop (except Apple) and screws are starting to unscrew themselves and fall out. The latest is the screw over the hard drive door.

I think I'll take my MacBook build quality... I'll just square off the edges and paint it black lol :)

You're referring to the T400, right? My 3 year-old T43 has no keyboard flex.

Honestly, I am not sure which he has. I know that it is a T series because I helped him pick it out, I know that it is a 14" widescreen at 1440*900, but past that, I am not sure. It doesn't look like the T400 that they have pictured on the website, I don't recall there being any ports on the front of the system, only on the sides, at least that is what I recall. It is fairly thin, the battery is located in the back, has a trackpad... past that, I just am not sure.

Excellent question. I'm glad I went for a cheap last gen.

Then you should have said IBM... I agree with you on that score. The IBM thinkpads are absolute tanks. I had heard good things about the Lenovo thinkpads, but I am not very impressed with how my friends turned out. His also has a stuck pixel, but that can happen to anyone. My MacBook has this one bright spot on the left side of the screen, I almost never notice it anymore though, and I haven't ever had anyone else point it out to me.

Dude, you saw it? When was this? Or did I tell you about a time that someone else saw it? I'm confused...

I see it just about every time I use your MacBook. I commented on it the first time I saw it.

This is anecdotal but when i unlatched the batter and HDD cover and put it back for the first time, the fit was imperfect as well. In particular, the seam along the middle of the notebook will protrude a bit. I'm not sure if this is what the user in the article was referring to but it just took some maneuvering to get it to fit just fine. From what I can tell, the latch openings and fittings are pretty tight and if you don't slide in the cover just right it won't close properly. I don't know if Apple is even going to sell backup batteries but i wouldn't suggest constantly removing and replacing batteries, the cover's fit is just too tight for daily replacement and opening. I would imagine this was part of the design because apple wanted a tight fit and had to sacrifice usability for that clean, one piece look.
