Why buy a dysfunctional company with a lot of baggage when you already have your own team?
A LOT or patents and even more... They have MIPS processors too... Apple would get the GPU patents, some CPU ones and a uARCH ideal for mobiles... Apple would be unbeatable.

The worse part for the competition is that they simply can use MIPS to make their exclusive apps even more exclusive eventually (10 years) in case something goes wrong with ARM..

And why buy a dysfunctional company with a lot of baggage when everybody is going to be trying to jump ship to better, more secure opportunities in the industry? Apple will get ImgTec's best people, you can count on that.

It sounds like ImgTec's IP is probably actually worth a decent amount, but Apple's bean counters may have decided it may be cheaper to deal with litigation or licence the IP than to buy ImgTec outright.

If Apple bought ImgTec, they'd probably shut most of it down. They already went through this process with PA Semi, and perhaps decided the extra headache wasn't worth it, given the overall cost.
