Apple and AT&T

Rumors say that they'll go with TMobile instead of AT&T but I highly doubt they'll officially announce anything until around the time the new iPhone is announced.

I know t-mobile has spectrum in the 3G AWS band (non-iPhone compatible), but are they exclusively so? I mean, will Apple have to release a new version of iPhone compatible with the 3G AWS band to use t-mobile or?

To say T-mobile has 3g coverage is a bit of a stretch. Their 3g coverage is worse then what Verizon wants you to think ATT's coverage is. I can't see apple doing that with their 'apple experience'.

agreed. apple would have to make a separate iphone just to use 3G on tmobile's network. i dont know of any phones who support both at&t 3G and tmobile 3G...i could be wrong though 🙂

I remember there was talk of Apple just releasing an iPhone with two carrier radios in it, for customer simplicity, one phone for multiple networks, but that was a while ago..

T-Mobile would be a bad choice. AT&T network is rumored to be bad, but T-Mobile coverage is crap to say the least (10-5mins outside of Springfield and you get no signal). Verizon if anything I would say.

i definitely could see this happening. att would lose a ton of customers i would think. however, i wouldnt go to them since my discount would be lost!

I don't think Apple will make a new phone to work on Verizons network unless the cost is under the projected sales networth... screw it anyways, i hate apple and am going with a Droid phone.

Good luck - it's not nearly as nice of a user experience as the iPhone is. My brother has one - it's a tad laggy and nothing in the interface is unified. Speakerphone actually works though :awe: I ditched AT&T a week or two ago and just got a basic cell phone from Verizon. I actually get service everywhere now, yay. AT&T's service has gone down for me in the 3 years I owned an iPhone. I'll go back when either the 4G network comes out (providing the reception has improved along with it) or when the iPhone comes to Verizon.

If Tmobile is a bad choice for next generation iPhone....Apple might want to work with Sprint?

Here in CT, Sprint is the crappiest you can buy, followed by T-Mobile, then AT&T. Verizon is stellar. From coast to coast I've heard T-Mobile is pretty bad, and Sprint is bad in most places. Verizon vs. AT&T is more about where you live, I think.

If there was a phone with the combined features of the Storm and Droid, it'd be a winner for me.

The Google phone - the Nexus One - might be what you're looking for. It's similar to the Eris Android phone (no keyboard) but has a trackball like a Blackberry...

I follow the analysts pretty closely, supposedly the hybrid Qualcom chipset will be ready for some testing next year, there's nothing showing up on the logs at the moment that would indicate there's a CDMA iPhone in the field yet. There have been reports of a new generation iPhone being tested, apparently on ATT.

So, maybe late 2010 or 2011 for a Verizon iPhone.

However, it seems Apple & Verizon are working on something near term, and I suspect the tablet will be a Verizon supported device.

No one is saying for sure, but it's said the exclusive iPhone/ATT contact ends in June.

From looking at ATT's infrastructure expenditures, I suspect they're very aware they're going to lose the exclusive status they currently have, ie: making the most $ they possibly can with their current network without building out more to accommodate the needs of being the exclusive carrier and having a captive audience for the next generation of iPhones.

Logicallly, TMobile would be an easy choice for Apple as the retooling to throw in a TMobile 3G compatible chipset would be minimal, BUT, with only 33 million customers, and with it's network limitations, they're not as an attractive partner as Verizon.

So, I would guess if Apple continues with it's current marketing/partnerships, I would guess a deal with TMobile near term, then a deal with Verizon as the hardware is developed to use their network, unless they ink a very lucrative deal with Verizon.

It's an interesting situation, if the damn US market wasn't so screwed up with different technologies, things would be simpler.

Also, in other countries, Apple has maintained relationships with past carriers while expanding their market penetration by bringing on new carriers...

Damn you Steve Jobs, you're so inscrutable.
