Apple 20" Cinema Display at Fry's

mdahc

If Outpost.com has the 20" Cinema Display, does that mean it's available at the retail Fry's store as well (I don't have a Fry's in my state) for that price? I'd ultimately like to get the LCD from CompUSA and have them match Outpost/Fry's price, but I think they'll only do price matches if the competitor offers the product in a brick and mortar store at that price. The whole point is to also add on CompUSA's 2yr warranty, which does not seem to be an option anywhere else except Apple and other resellers of AppleCare, which requires the display be purchased with a machine to extend the LCD's warranty beyond the initial 1st yr.

You could get a Dell 2001FP and have a 3 year warranty on it.

Much cheaper, it has the same panel, and is essentially the same monitor.

Yes I know, but I'd prefer widescreen and anything but Dell. Has anyone been to a local Fry's lately? Have you seen the 20" Cinema display in the store?

Thanks. I guess I'll call the Fry's nearest me and just ask if they actually carry them (maybe they were just out of stock at your Fry's)?

Well, the Dell 2005 FPW is widescreen and the EXACT same panel as the 20" Apple Cinescreen, not to mention that you can get it for $500-600 if you just look around. I dislike dell but a savings of $400-500 is worth it for me.

Also, Dell has a 21-day satisfaction garuntee, I just got a replacement for my 2005 FPW because I did not like the one dead pixel in it, now I have a dead-pixel free monitor and still have a 3-year warranty.

Seriously, are firewire/usb ports (the Dell ONLY has USB ports on it) and a aluminum frame really worth $400? Swallow your pride man and jump on the Dell bandwagon! 🙂

If you are still set on this waste of money, then I must inform you that my local fry's (Renton, WA) did NOT have it on display last time I was there. I did not ask if they had it in stock, but it was most certaintly not on display, just the 30" and 23" models.

And I don't see what your post is contributing to this thread... j/k 😉

Actually I enjoy the widescreen for movies, that 80 pixels makes alot of difference. And Games look AWESOME when the support widescreen, something about spreading the screen horizontally is just visually pleasing. Still, I have the best of both worlds, I have my 2005 fpw and my 21" CRT running at 1800x1440 @ 80hz so I can go either way.

If you got to ask, you'll never know... 🙂

It isn't just about real estate, but about usable real estate. I prefer the widescreen aspect ratio, and I don't need the height. I guess it's a matter of preference.

I refuse to deal with Dell again. Yes, I'd prefer saving the money, but if I get a 2005fpw that starts bleeding or whatever else after 21 days, they'll send me a refurb as a replacement, and I've had no success with their refurb replacements (too long of a story). I realize that all OEM's share this practice, but with CompUSA, if something like that happens and you have their TAP warranty, you get a brand new item (or the modern equivalent not exceeding the original value). For example, I bought a set of Logitech Z-680's and a 2yr TAP warranty from CompUSA a little over a year ago, and the subwoofer starting rattling one day. I took it back, they didn't carry the 680's any more, and I got a brand new set of 5500's. No long waits or coversations over the phone, no hassles, just a simple replacement. To me, that's worth the extra money. If it's not to you, I respect that. Maybe you will or have had better luck with Dell or some other OEM.

In terms of why I prefer a WSXGA, I just prefer the aspect ratio more for games and video like Spike. Nothing more to it really.

Well, in that case I would STILL look at anything but Apple. Their stuff is WAY to overpriced, check out the other 19-21" LCD's out there (thought I am not sure how many other widescreen LCD's you can find).

Sorry you had a problem with Dell, my issues were solved quickly (called up one night, spent 10 min on the phone, got a replacement two days later). I have slight backlight problems but found a good fix that involves adjusting contrast with your vid card so I am going to try that tonight.

That's just it...there are no other OEM's who resell that LG Philips WSXGA panel. I currently have a 21" CRT with 1600x1200, and I don't want to drop down to 1280x1024 or 1280x768. UXGA LCD's aren't that much cheaper, so I figured why not go with the WSXGA, which brings me back to Dell and Apple. I'm not planning on purchasing until later on this year, so maybe the Apple version will come down more in price or maybe someone else will come out with a WSXGA panel. I'm just trying to sort out my options now.

Don't listen to these people, the 20" Apple CD is AWESOME! Great looking display.

I don't know if it has been answered, but yes, Fry's should carry it. At least it does where I live. 😉

my fry's in SD has the 20" cinema display- however i dont think they pricematch it considering they wouldnt give me a student discount like i can get from apple, so i ended up just going to an apple store and getting it w/ the student discount 100 bucks cheaper

I don't believe anyone here said anything was wrong with the Apple LCD, just that is is WAY overpriced. It's build quality and panel are excellent, it's just the extra $$ they want for it that some of us have a hard time going with.

OP, I agree that the price may go down in the near future. With Dell undercutting Apple so much in the 20" area and now having a 24" that is $400-500 cheaper than the Apple 23" they might try to cut prices to be a little more competitive. I have no information to back this up, it's just a thought.

So if these Dell's are the same screens as the Apple Cinema's, do the Apple's have backlighting issues as well?

I sure as hell hope not. If so, then it could be returned immediately with a quick trip back to CompUSA, not to mention if the backlight has issues later it would be covered under the TAP warranty, which can also be renewed.

Apple's education discount is only through your educational institution. I get the educational discount as well, but again, only through my educational institution and Apple (back to the 1yr warranty). Thus, instead of paying $899 + tax with the education discount, I wanted CompUSA to match Outpost/Fry's $949 price (then add on the TAP). Thus, I'd only be losing out on an extra $50 discount.

The dell's definitely have a major backlight issue. I thought it was overblown until I got one myself along with dead pixels to match.

Got a second one, insisted they send me a new one, and it has no dead pixels but way worse backlight bleeding.

Dell reeks, and you do get what you pay for. I am this close to just shoving it and paying an extra $500 (yikes) just to get a good panel from apple the first time. But I only paid $550 for the 2005fpw. So for that price, I can only notice the backlighting problem on black, so I am on the fence. But I remember Dell used to be a higher end name when they made desktops; now theyr'e like the seikos of the target superstores. Their brand name has been so diluted out.

from someone who owns both a cinema display and 2005fpw go w/ the 2005fpw if you want features go w/ a cinema if you want the clean design- probably better build quality ive never heard of backlight issues on an apple, and im pretty sure the screen on mine is actually glass instead of the plastic

I know it's unlikely, but does any of you think the Cinema Display and the 2005fpw do not use the same LG Philips panel? I looked at the specs, and there are some differences in the brightness and contrast ratio (CD: brightness=250cd/m2, contrast ratio=400:1; 2005fpw: brightness=300cd/m2, contrast ratio=600:1). Would LG Philips provide two different versions with differing brightness and contrast?

no, they both use the same panel the only difference parts of the build- i think different back light, apple has a more heavy duty constructed frame, and a different material covering the screen which probably would could have an affect on the brightness and contrast

Actually, unless Apple's policy has changed since about a year ago (which is when I looked into this myself), you can get Apple's student discount not only on phone orders & Web orders you place with Apple, but also at CompUSSR's "Apple Store." 😛 A chap named William at the little Apple Store in the CompUSSR here in my area (Fountain Valley, Calif.) told me this to my face about a year ago, and another chap at Apple (whose name I've forgotten) told me the same thing over the phone.

You just need to be able to provide proof/evidence that you're a student, and you will get your discount. That is, like I said earlier, unless they've changed their policy.

BTW, mdahc, you left out the brightness spec for the Apple monitor in your last post.

I agree that the one-year-warranty-only sitch sucks about the Apple monitors (unless you buy them with a computer). Why they do this, I don't know. Prolly the same kind of
reasoning that went into the decision to put a 5400-rpm hard drive in the Mac Mini .... Other than that, I love the looks and quality of Apple monitors. The build quality is just so excellent. Prices, however, are another story ....

Edited to fix a typo

The whole reason why there are little to no issues with backlight bleeding and/or dead pixels on Apple's monitors most likely has to do with quality control. Sure they may use the same panel, but I bet Apple hand selects and tests the ones they put out for sale. Their company is based a lot on their public image where they are seen as being aestically pleasing and they couldn't stand having subpar components going into any of their products. Plus much of the graphic design community revolves around Apple products and as such need top notch components as well. This is seen in all of their computer designs and products in general, they control the hardware and software and as such can make sure everything works together nicely and looks good doing it.
