Apparently my neighborhood is filled with suspicious people with nothing better to do

Saw this on our Community Facebook page today:

Hi everyone, there was a large black GMC Yukon SUV in the sub this morning. Didn't recognize it and it seemed to slow down as it drove by houses, almost like it was trying to see if anyone was home or maybe looking for unattended packages. Just an FYI

I saw the same vehicle and thought it was really weird. I tried to capture the license number but wasn't able to. The GMC was extended and had a trailer hitch.

Right. It couldn't be that Google Maps and GPS all have our house locations off by a half mile or so and the person was just looking at the addresses. Nope. That $50k SUV was looking break into a house or for amazon packages to steal

My neighbor was telling me about our neighborhood facebook group. It is moderated by a realtor. If anyone posts anything negative about the neighborhood it gets deleted.

I'm not clear on what the problem is.

Isn't it better to be safe than sorry?

Safe from what? There is one of these posted about once a month if not more but we have no issues of break-ins, robberies or package theft. I don't live in irrational fear so my first thought when I see a car driving down my street isn't "OMG they must be casing the houses theft!" but "Oh man - another person who has to deal with inaccurate GPS destinations and poorly positioned house numbers".

"In the sub"?

Subdivision
Yeah, I figured, it was more of a scoff at the abbreviation.

For the first 7-8 years of living in my subdivision, of which I was the 6th resident in it out of 109 homeowners, I was looked upon as a stranger and someone that wasn't a resident. I guess working nights and never being seen might have forwarded their paranoia, but I lived for the chance for them to cal the police. Unfortunately, it never came.

I guess I have to take your word that you live in a 0% crime neighborhood.

But they're not patrolling the neighborhood Zimmerman-style, are they? They're just posting on a stupid FB page.

That's how Neighborhood Watch works.

Neither you know nor they know for certain what the vehicle* was doing there.

If you're that offended, you should consider moving out. Why be associated with people like that? If you decide to stay, make your thoughts known. Let them know that you don't appreciate their concerns that in your mind are unfounded. I'm sure the neighbors would be happy to look the other way should a break-in occur at your place on one of your many out of town adventures.

The petty train runs in two directions.

*The Yukon badge was first used in the 1992 model year. I don't know what the price tag was then, but I'll bet that 1992 model is not worth $50K today but it's still a Yukon.

That pisses me off. Can't handle the truth? Bury it.

Sounds like a neighborhood watch type of deal, doesn't seem like a big deal. Just ignore it if it upsets you?

Never said I did. Statistically the residents should be more afraid of the stairs in their house or the pools in the backyard but its the cars that drive by on public streets that worry them. I'm not sure I would want to live in an area where a low crime rate and home security system* weren't enough to make me feel safe from cars driving by my house.

*Because the discount on home owners insurance more than covers the cost of installation all new homes are coming with them

If you're that offended, you should consider moving out.

Offended? It couldn't possibly be that this was an eye-roll moment or anything.

I see nothing wrong with this. Just neighbors trying to be cautious. Like someone else posted, better safe than sorry. If this did end up being something serious, at least you would have some kind of documentation going on.

Edit: this also happens in my neighborhood, except we use an email distribution list. every now and then someone will post something about a suspicious car, etc. I'm glad they do.

When this line of thinking goes too far:

https://www.coloradoan.com/story/ne...ng-native-american-men-campus-tour/576755002/

On a CSU Admissions tour Monday, a parent participating in the tour called campus police because she was nervous about the presence of two young men who joined the tour while it was in progress. Police responded to the call by contacting the young men, who are Native American and visiting from New Mexico, during the tour. The CSUPD spoke with the students, confirmed they were part of the tour, and allowed them to rejoin the group. Unfortunately, due to the location of the tour when the contact was made, the Admissions tour guide was unaware that police had been called or responded, and the tour group had moved on without the students, who returned to Ammons Hall briefly, then left campus to return home to New Mexico.

Eh yeah I saw that in the news today. It does remind me of the OP's thread though haha. The mother of those two Native American kids that got the cops called on them is going full nutso now, though, lol. Then the president of that school, or whatever high-up persons, sends out an email to students about it. I'm thinking... it's not the students who were the paranoid, busy-body idiots, it was some parent in a tour group. But whatevs.

I'm perfectly okay with neighborhoods actively monitoring things that are suspicious. Cars driving through a neighborhood really slowly checking out porches are *probably* looking for an address, but they could be looking for packages to lift and a little vigilance doesn't hurt. It's a better use of time than going around with a ruler to make sure peoples grass is cut properly and insuring that their garden shed is an approved shade of beige.

What I object to is the stupidity of using Facebook as if that's going to help in any way. Especially when the fucktard can't even get a plate number. If you care about your neighborhood grab the plate number and watch the vehicle. If it stops and steals something, call the police. If it moves on, then forget about it.

Maybe they just need to ask someone online where they need to have lunch. Probably stuck in their houses, unable to decide.

Hmm...

99% of the people that we encouner are great. Yes, you want to be proactive and report suspicious activity. But, when you're living in a state of fear and you're looking out your window and report on someone driving thru your town well that's not living. IMO, it's all fear based. I've stopped watching the news. I got rid of my CNN, FOX and CNBC apps. I have Flipboard and I've set it up to where I get nothing but positive feedback. I can read about fashion, learning new languages, travel, meditation, gaming, technology, etc. Everything but news. I'm trying to get my dad to stop watching the news. He goes from Fox to CNN and back again. The world's amazing with great people.
