Apparently my 10Mbs network transfer speed is not fast enough to stream video...

I tried to watch a DVD over my network but it was very choppy.

How fast of a transfer speed is needed to watch streaming video?

Thanks.

At Notfred said... Plus 10Mbit is the theoretical throughput of 10bt, actually you get more like 600-700k/s.

I'm not trying to brag (and most of you already have 100Mbit anyway), but I really do take the 100Mbit for granted. I thought it was overkill for streaming stuff from my computer to this laptop... I watch everything remotely in bed or in the living room.

WTF? You have 100Mbit wireless setup?

What things are you using?

Previous owner of the house put LAN drops in 2 bedrooms and the living room... cables all leading to the office which the router is in. 😉

I think wireless is only up to 56Mbits with 802.11g eh ?

I have a wireless network (partially wireless anyway--the "server" is a PC that has a 10/100Mbs NIC card connected to a 22Mbs wireless router); so I guess the theoretical top transfer speed would be limited to the NIC's slowest speed, right?

10/100 NIC are dirt cheap, usually can getem $10-15 bucks w/ rebate, checkout hotdeals forum.
IT's worth it, i stream cvideo. also if you can change the format and wathch as mpeg (you'd have to ripp them) that would work too. but ripping software would likely cost more than 2 nic's

Man, your lucky u had a fellow geek own the house before u 🙂

I'm in Korea for a business trip, and I've found out that most apartment buildings built in the last couple years have lan connections in each room and the residents get either free or heavily reduced broadband connection. I went to a model house and saw a refrigerator with a lcd screen at which you can order groceries, rent movies from nearby stores, check e-mail & browse the net.
