Apparently I'm Missing A User!!

Hey, after I installed w2k adv. server & applied SP2 I installed active directory with the default options for a single server network model. After install/reboot, I now have a user that seems to be hanging around that has permissions to various files/folders/etc. But this user is unlike the rest as he has a transparent white icon with a red "?" in the bottom left-hand corner. The name given for the user is S-1-5-32-547 (which I did a search on - seems to be the Power User group..). Does this mean that some reg keys weren't cleaned up after AD was created & local user/groups were destroyed?

Any info would be much appreciated.

It is the SID for a User/Group that was deleted. Since the User/Group Name was removed the only way Windows has to refer to it is by the SID. It will have that entry in all places you have that User/Group permissions set.

It's not "stray" registry keys, this behavior is intended.
 
So Microsoft intended to have Users with SID as usernames with question marks as icons instead of doing things the right way and removing all references for that user/group when they are deleted? Hmm.. this makes me question Microsoft a little. But, there is a first time for everything!

Why is removing all references the right way??? There are reasons someone may want to know what files/folders the account had access to.

If you are trying to insinuate that this is a security issue I'd love to hear how you can recreate that particular SID other than restoring a backup. Once a SID is used it's gone and will never be valid on that machine or domain again.
