Apparently, I signed up for AOL

A charge appeared on my Amex for AOL... That's a good one. I must be one of the world's biggest haters of AOL.

15 minutes playing in their phone maze, 1 custmoer service rep, and 1 disconnect so far... And nothing - back into the maze.

Has this happened to anyone else?

AOL is horrible to cancel. Why not try through Amex since you didn't authorize the charge?

I have no idea how you got signed up though.

Not good, apprently someone got hold of my number and signed up for AOL as part of one of those promotional free ipod gimmicks. They read off their screen that I had a screen name... This is golden. Calling Amex now to cancel account number and reissue card.

Just keep in mind, if it comes down to it you're only responsible for the first $50 of fradulent charges on a card, max. That is by federal law. I doubt Amex will screw with you over that, but in case someone else does, there ya go.

Now you need to ask yourself how your card number got stolen.

Card number as well as name and address, according to AOL. Someone had all of that. Now the irony is that I was on a cruise ship when this charge occured. In any case, the number is cancelled, a fraud investigation is underway, and I am expecting a new card next week.

I think with their current publicitly, they've made the process much easier. I canceled my wife's grandmother's account last weekend, absolutely no hassles.

My hassle was minimal, although irritating. The rep didn't believe me when I told him it was a rogue charge, implying that someone in my household may have signed up or something similar. No matter, it's all settled now. A bit unnerving since I can't pinpoint how the number was compromised, but I'll live.
