App to write 0's to a hd

Trying to use a hd for windows that was last used for debian progeny. I've been told I need to write 0's to the first 128 sectors of the drive to clear all traces of lilo. It's a 5 gig IBM notebook drive. I downloaded Zap from IBM's site, which supposedly does just that, but apparently doesn't work on their notebook drives.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

is ZAP IBMs diagnostic tool? if not do they have another? if so most likely that will be the utlity to look for.....

after that i'd try DD, from what i've heard she'll pretty much anything..
