You can both watch and record unencrypted HD content via the firewire output of an appropriate device. You will not be able to watch anything that is flagged to prevent recording, however (whether HD or not). This includes most content on channels like HBO or Showtime, and some TV shows (for instance, ESPNHD prevents recording of a lot of its shows, or at least did a while back). You need programs that know how to deal with .ts (raw MPEG-2 transport stream) files.
