App to show S.M.A.R.T. info from exteral drive?

I want to keep tabs on my external drive. Speedfan shows the S.M.A.R.T. info for both my internal drives, but it won't show any information on my external drive. Is there any way to retrieve this information or is it simply not being transported through the USB/Firewire connection?
 
Seems to me that whatever the manufacturer's use to do the ATA->USB/Firewire conversion ignores or just doesn't support SMART cause I can't get it to work either. I thought about taking the drive out of the case and plugging it in just to make sure the drive itself does SMART, but that's too much work and pretty much every drive built in the last 10 years does SMART so it probably does.
