Apocalypto

I just watched it tonight for the first time...and wow. One of the best movies I've seen in awhile. I'm not a big action movie fan, but this movie was something else. If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The authenticity of it is unreal as well.

The Departed was awesome...I'd put Apocalypto right about even with The Departed, very different movies though.

I wouldn't really call it "authentic". It's basically an action film set loosely in the Mayan culture IMHO. Still a good movie.

A movie with a bunch of mexicans running around? no thanks

A. they're not Mexicans
B. even if you pretend that they're "mexicans", they do kill/maim each other enough to satisfy even your racist side

i really enjoyed the movie; unfortnately, it is not authentic in terms of the buildings portrayed --> where they laid their sacrificed bodies, who was sacrificed, and the fact that a full moon is impossible after a solar eclipse.

but, besides those issues, i thought the make-ups on the people to create the illusions of decades-old piercings, tattoos, and wounds was extremely creative and convincing. It had a great cast of nobodies who did their job well.

It was a refreshing movie in that it was about a movie on a civilization that is rarely a focal point in hollywood, but based on a semi-cookie-cutter storyline and cliche's.

not perfect, but i appreciated the work that went into the movie and enjoyed it.

too bad the departed was just a remake of an awesome HK film. the original is better.

apocalypto was great and since it was an original, it is far better than the departed.

I really enjoyed it. Not having seen the original film that inspired The Departed, I'd say I liked The Departed a bit better than Apocalypto (as long as we're making that comparison), but both were very good films.

Wasn't a very big fan of this. I guess it was brutal, but I prefer wars as opposed to single acts.

The Jaguar scene was completely laughable.

The only problem I had with Apocalypto was some of the language they used. I don't want to ellaborate in case it might spoil something, but the part towards the end... I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I thought those facts were a bit off after I saw that Mayan dude throw the slave off the Space Needle into the Sun. But it was otherwise an enjoyable movie.

Why do you say it's too bad? The Departed was a great film and I hate HK films, so, I'd say it was better.

'Unreal' is the correct word. It's about as realistic as the threat from Iraqi's WMDs was.

i thought the acting was fine in the HK version. I was pissed off when the Departed had the bit about spelling "citizen" wrong. in the HK version it actually makes sense as chinese characters are complicated and have a much greater possibility of being incorrectly written.

the whole citizen bit was just corny and turned me off the movie.

Overall, I'd say that's a pretty small detail in the greater story and plot.

The original was awesome. Too bad The Departed is like 100 spots higher on the IMDB Top 250 than the original.

They had to work it in somehow. The "citizen" bit definitely worked.

And rightfully so.
