cause paying for theaters is a waste of money nowadays, unless something is REALLY good.
Budgeted at $40 million, Apocalypto enjoyed a $15 million opening weekend, topping the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle Blood Diamond and Nancy Meyers' The Holiday. The following weekend, it dropped 46.6% to land in sixth place. It dipped another 50% over the four-day Christmas frame and fell out of the top 10 altogether. As of January 18, 2007 the film has grossed $77,763,581 worldwide.

everyone says it was a good movie, but the movie did horrible in the movie theathers. Chances are you didn't see it. Why?
Was it because of Mel G.?
I feel bad for the guy. He put 100m of his own money towards that movie and the movie didn't even generate half of that.

$40M was the budget for the fil. Add in advertising and we are at $50 - 60M easy. Theatres give half their box office reciepts to the film. So a $50M box office take actually only pays out $25M.
Lots of money, actaully more money than the box offcie run is generally made on DVD sales.
Mel may have broke even on this one but I doubt he made good money on it.
