apocalypto

everyone says it was a good movie, but the movie did horrible in the movie theathers. Chances are you didn't see it. Why?

Was it because of Mel G.?

I feel bad for the guy. He put 100m of his own money towards that movie and the movie didn't even generate half of that.

Too true. Seeing a movie at a big theater with a popcorn and soda costs me more than $12 in a small'ish city in Indiana...$12 spent at the right time for me can equal a couple of dvd's. I don't even want to imagine what a couple with children pays to see a movie on the big screen... (we're probably talking Disney dvd boxset range 😀 )

Um, are you on something?

Budgeted at $40 million, Apocalypto enjoyed a $15 million opening weekend, topping the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle Blood Diamond and Nancy Meyers' The Holiday. The following weekend, it dropped 46.6% to land in sixth place. It dipped another 50% over the four-day Christmas frame and fell out of the top 10 altogether. As of January 18, 2007 the film has grossed $77,763,581 worldwide.

$40mn != $100mn
$77mn != $50mn

I didn't go see it because from what I head seen/heard it didn't have much of a point and was pretty much just excessive violence. The previews and things that I saw didn't really do much for me either. I'll probably see it sometime though.

I took the DVD to my gf place, she was grossed out after only watching it for about 7 minutes so I had to take it off. I hate watching movies alone.

DVD? when did it come to DVD?

guess you all aren't afraid of the MPAA

& my bad, I thought mel donated 100m and the movie grossed only 50m. Guess he did make money off the film.

didnt even know Mel G was involved in it.

i didnt see it because the previews looked stupid

$40M was the budget for the fil. Add in advertising and we are at $50 - 60M easy. Theatres give half their box office reciepts to the film. So a $50M box office take actually only pays out $25M.

Lots of money, actaully more money than the box offcie run is generally made on DVD sales.

Mel may have broke even on this one but I doubt he made good money on it.
