APM/ACPI issues in Win98

I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows and while the system is performing nearly flawlessly (as much as Windows can be ^_^ ) I'm having this one nagging problem. Under the Power Management control panel, I don't see a pull-down menu to adjust the idle shutoff time for the monitor. I see pull-downs for system standby mode and hard disk shutoff, but no tab for monitor. In this control panel there are also only two tabs on the top, 'Power Schemes' and 'Advanced'. I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be a third one in the middle, but I forgot what it's called.

After closer examination, I think that Advanced Power Management isn't installed in Device Manager. My motherboard (shiny new A7V133) says it supports APM, but I don't see listings for APM anywhere in device manager. I see listings out the yin-yang for 'ACPI', which I've heard is superior to APM. Problem is, I don't see any way to configure ACPI, if you're supposed to be able to configure it.

I've tried reinstalling Windows on top of itself twice. No luck at all. The only thing that's done is give me a headache. I don't think this is a serious enough problem to make me want to do another clean reinstall of Windows, though I would like to get this fixed.

If this helps any, here is my system stats:
CPU: Athlon 900
Motherboard: ASUS A7V133
Video card: Geforce2MX
RAM: 256mb PC-133
Monitor: 17 inch, don't know what brand (registers as plug 'n play)
CD-R: Hi-Val 2801TE (piece 'o crap)
DVD: 12X Delta
Sound Card: SB Live Value
OS: Windows 98

I have noticed another thing that's odd though, in addition to a 'plug and play' monitor, my system keeps registering an 'unknown monitor'. I only have one monitor plugged in, although I do have a scan convertor hooked up between my PC and TV.

Nevermind, I found a way to work around this problem. I rigged my USB gamepad to emulate a keyboard and set one of the buttons to behave like a keyboard button that has no function in a particular program. Rig it so that the button is constantly pressed down and voila-- the computer thinks you're mashing down on the keyboard, so it won't idle. Interesting work around, but it works. ^_^

There is a way to configure the monitor shutdown on a Win98se system. I don't have 98se right now, so can't try it, but when I had it there was a way. Have you tried going through the monitors (screensaver) control panel. Also, I believe there is an install switch to install in either ACPI mode or non ACPI mode. Also, can you turn off ACPI support in your bios?

I tried looking in the display/power management control panels, no dice. I don't think there's an option in the BIOS to disable ACPI, but I might have overlooked it. Like I said before, I found a roundabout solution, so I won't stress over this anymore.

Thanks for replying though. ^_^
