From what I remember, I don't think I remember these getting very good ratings. I think there are some sub $200 pioneer progressive scans that are supposed to be among the best, or at least best for the $$.

The Panasonic RP56 is also very highly rated (it contains a chipset that's usually used in more expensive ProgScan players), and can be found extremely reasonably priced ($159 or so?). Worth the few extra bucks IMO..

the only thing I gotta give to apex is their dvd players have never had problems reading my vcd's and svcd's. I've had so many problems with toshiba and pioneer playing some of the vcd's I've made and no matter how badly the toshiba and pioneer plays it the apex one that we have never has a problem.

I agree. The Panny RP56 is definitely the best value for progressive scan DVD, especially with its Sage chipset. My dad has one paired with his Sony 32" Wega XBR, and the results are great.

I've got 3 Apex DVD players and I've never had a problem with them. The last one I bought was the 3 disk model that also supports displaying JPG photographs and Kodak Picture CD's for $129. I use it to play the VCD and SVCD movies I download or rip from DVD. It beats my Toshiba DVD hands down at playing VCD's. Haven't looked into progressive scan yet, what kind of TV do you need to take advantage of progressive scan ? Someone told me that you need an HDTV to see any difference.

also Peeps APEX are the easiest to hack! most BiG brandnames are near impossible to Hack.

also the APEX will play any CD/DVD in any format you throw at it. :p
