Is there a region/microvision bypass thingy on the 500a model?

Don't think there is a 500a, I believe there is a 600a and a 660. It's probably a 600a, because the 660 is the replacement. And no there is no loophole on the current 600a, you need to get the models made 01/2000 (I believe) or earlier and the one in the store are no longer, for some time now, available.

A $99 DVD player is a good entry-level player even without any fancy gimics.

$100 is about what most people will play for non-essential electronics crap. I would call this a decent deal.
