For a boat load of info on DVD players and their abilities go to
www.vcdhelp.com and select the DVD player list on the left.
The player is great for VCD/SVCD playback and in fact can play S(X)VCD's all the way to at least 3500 kbit video + 224 audio.
My only real knocks on the player is that it is cheaply built and it has a slightly blue hue to the video. I have compared
this player to several others, but unless you do a direct compare it's hardly noticable.
I make my own SVCD videos all the time and I bought this player, although I didn't keep it. I ended up getting basically the
same player, but a 3 disc changer model 5131 for $129. Since SVCD's tend to require more then 1 disc this was a better fit for me.
One word of caution about hacking the player. If you make it region free you will not be able to play RCE encoded discs. Mostly
only being made for region 1 right now. This is an enhancement to the region encoding that requires a region to be set to allow
playback. Only about 10% to 15% of discs being made have this. If you can get a hack that actually sets a region and allows you
to change it you are all set, but I have not seen a software hack for this.
