Here is another inexpensive APEX DVD player. Looks a little better than the other APEX's out there. (Silver colored) Reviews I have read say it will play just about anything even with cheap cd-r's; including mpeg's and DIVx rips. I have mine playing through my VCR and it works fine out of the box.

Plays These Formats: DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, Kodak Picture CD (JPEG) Picture Quality
S-video connection, Composite video connection, Dolby Digital surround sound output, DTS surround sound output

My local Wal-Mart has stock of model 500w, 1100w, and 1500. They are all three $73.44, so which is the best to get? Most hackable? Least bugs? Best features?

Do a search for "Apex" on this site. It has a pretty good breakdown of all the Apex DVD players.

I also have a AD-1200 which was very easy to hack with just the remote. Up-up-down-down-B-A-select-start; Oh wait, that was Contra...
It too can play just about anything, but it feels cheap.

I don't believe that it will play divx movies: only mpeg-1 and DVD bitrate Mpeg-2. Personally, I have an AD-1500 for $79 from Circuit City that you can hack to Macrovision and Region free using a CD-R disc burned from an online ISO image (no chip modding required).

My 1500 plays all of my mp3's and DVD's great, but it seems to have problems with some VCDs... But it could just be my crappy encoder that's the problem...

All in all, it's a great value at $80. But I'm talking about the 1500, not the 1100w.

But regardless, I'm fairly positive that there is NO DivX decoder on the 1100w or it would be MUCH more popular than it is... In fact, I haven't seen a standalone DivX player yet (other than my old laptop).

I have the 1100w. It plays DVDs and SVCDs fine. However, it does not play SVCD subtitles. That may not matter to you if you don't watch SVCDs or ones with subtitles, but I think the 1500 does do svcd subs. Besides that, it is a great player. By the way, there are no dvd players that play divx but it looks like some are being developed: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/020409/90258_1.html

I have a dvd player made by Genica, the model is GN-800. It plays anything, except divX. There are rumors of a stand-alone divX player in the works, but as of now you have to use your computer for that. Most dvd players will play VCD's with no problem if they're done right, www.vcdhelp.com has a list which will tell you the models and brands. I burn VCD's for my dvd player almost every day and never had a problem. The Apex models (most all of them) will play them just fine.
