I saw this earlier at my local Wal-Mart.
It was $98 and some change. It plays mp3s as well!
I went ahead and bought one. I'll post results later.

I bought a Rait DVD player last summer which is esentially a rebagged Apex DVD player. It works great for playing mp3's although i dont use that feature because its in the same room as my computer but when playing DVD's it tends to skip a lot. Maby the newer ones are better but I can't recomend an Apex player from my own experience but at this price, its worth a try.

it should be noted that apex is a name that has been associated with versatility, never quaility. :) If it doesn't have the menu's anymore you need to think about what is left.

u can always flash the new firmware into them by burning it onto a cd and loading it (the 703) at least

I went through 3 of the Apex players before giving up and waiting for my PS2-----good price on it though--especially the model that'll play the mp3's.

I was just in a Super Wal-Mart last night (new one in Suffolk, VA) and saw about 75 of em on a pallet at this price. First thing that comes to my mind is "I wonder if anyone's posted this on Anandtech Hot Deals Forum". :)

I've been pretty happy with my Apex 600A DVD/mp3 player. I put it on shuffle, and have 150 songs on one CDR. And it plays DVD's as well!!! Again, price and features are the key, not super high quality, although I haven't had any problems so far with light use.

I've have an Apex 660 that I paid $99 for about 4 months ago and its been great. Plays everything including MP3s, VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs plus it also has DTS capability. No skips and no problems so far. In my opinion you can't beat it for the price even if it doesn't have the special menu to defeat the copy protection. I don't know how the 500 compares to the 660 though in terms of features or reliability.
