Apex 27" LCD HDTV $999 @ Sears - No rebates needed

Sears currently has the Apex 27" LCD HDTV for $999.

720p resolution (1280x720)
Widescreen, 16:9
DVI, VGA, 2x Component, Composite, and S-Video connections

You can order it via sears.com, or get it at the B&M store, if it's in stock (mine happened to have it, but I don't think many carry it in stock). They offer a rebate for shipping charges. Or, shipping is free if you have it sent to your local store & pick it up there.


I use mine with an HDTV receiver, and it looks great. It would probably also work well for PC or X-Box gaming. But, as a PC desktop it's kind of low resolution for such a large panel.. but it's not bad.

I haven't tried standard TV yet, but I expect it to look fairly bad. But, that's not a big deal for me. I got it for HDTV use.

Fry's B&M currently has the Syntax Olevia 27" LCD for $899 (no rebates needed). On their outpost.com site, this TV keeps bouncing between $899 and $999. But, in the B&M store it has always been around $1,100.

It's very similar to the Apex. Maybe a bit bulkier. But, the speakers on the Syntax can be removed, making it a bit smaller.

How is the black on this set?

On the Olevia, black is only decent looking head on... if you move 30 degrees or more off center, it will wash out a lot from the backlighting.

The black levels on it are decent, but not as great as some other types of HDTVs or even some of the more expensive LCDs.

I used to have a Sampo 34" HDTV CRT, and my parents have a 50" Samsung DLP. I don't notice any dramatic differences in black levels among those devices. But, maybe I'm just not as sensitive to that.

For me, it made more sense to go with a cheap LCD, while the high end units quickly come down in price (I think LCD prices will continue to rapidly drop). The TV I really wanted was the Sharp 26" LCD, with built-in HD tuner, cable card support, and firewire outputs. But, that was $2700.
